Black Bird of the Gallows by Meg Kassel
Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Publication Date:  September 5, 2017

A simple but forgotten truth: Where harbingers of death appear, the morgues will soon be full.

Angie Dovage can tell there’s more to Reece Fernandez than just the tall, brooding athlete who has her classmates swooning, but she can’t imagine his presence signals a tragedy that will devastate her small town. When something supernatural tries to attack her, Angie is thrown into a battle between good and evil she never saw coming. Right in the center of it is Reece—and he’s not human.

What’s more, she knows something most don’t. That the secrets her town holds could kill them all. But that’s only half as dangerous as falling in love with a harbinger of death.

Excerpt:

His soft voice clashes with the intensity of his gaze. “You’re adorable when you’re trying to be mad at me. You needn’t work so hard at it, though. We aren’t meant to be adversaries.”

I, um…” My thoughts disband, leaving nothing for communication purposes. I’adorable? Adorable has many definitions. I think my dog is adorable, for example. “That…wasn’t what I was going to ask you.”

He inclines his head“Okay, then. Ask.”

But that “adorable” echoes through me, clinking around like a penny down a well. “What are we meant to be, then?”

His lips curls up at the corners“That wasn’t your question, either.”

My Review:

Angie Dovage lived with her mom in a van for most of her life. Angie’s mom always tried to take care of her the best she knew how but being hooked on drugs made it kind of hard for her to raise a daughter. Angie’s mom committed suicide which was very hard for Angie to deal with.

Angie’s life became better when she went to live with her dad in the small town of Cadence. Life with her dad was great but life at Cadence High was not to thrilling when most of the kids thought of her as a freak because of her life with her mom.

The house next door to Angie’s has been empty for a long time as no one wants to live in a house someone has died in. But things start to look up for Angie with a family moves in and there just happens to be a hot guy Reece Fernandez who is about her age. Angie and Reece hit if off right from the beginning.

A bunch of crows seems to have moved into the neighborhood about the same time as the Fernandez. Angie knows that Reece is hiding something and is determined to find out what it is. Angie likes Reece a lot and if something is going with him she wants to help him; to make things better if possible. But she may just wish she had let it alone once she finds out what it is he is hiding.

Reece is a harbinger of death who only comes to a town when something bad is going to happen. Harbinger of death are not the only supernatural creature that has come for a visit. No there are Beekeepers as well. Beekeepers are very deadly. When a Beekeepers bee stings a person it causes the person to become very unstable and even dangerous.

There is one of the Beekeepers who has set his eyes on Angie for his personal gain but Reece will do everything in his power to keep the Beekeeper away from her. Reece will give up his own life if it means saving Angie’s.

Black Bird of the Gallows is a very fast read. I couldn’t to turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. It kept me up late into the wee hours of the night/morning wanting to know more about Angie, Reece, Lacey, Deeno, the crows, the harbingers of death and the beekeepers. Every time I would start to lay it down I couldn’t do it I had to pick it right back up. Black Bird of the Gallows is filled with lots and lots of action and magic and I love magic and dark gory things that go bump in the night. Black Birds of the Gallows put me in the mind of that old movie where birds/crows would attack people.

I would recommend Black Birds of the Gallows to anyone who loves reading about death and magic or just a great book.
