Excerpt:

I rolled over a big rock which tore at my parka then came up against a tree trunk with a bump. Hurriedly, I rose to a crouch and got behind the tree. As I did so, I heard another shot and pieces of bark showered my left cheek. I kept moving, dodging between trees, heading downhill. I heard several more shots as I ran but none seemed to come as close as the one that had struck the tree. I didn’t dare look back but I had a good guess as to the identity of my pursuer.

How the hell did he find me? I wondered. Then it struck me: he must have been waiting for me. He had taken a chance on me visiting Gabrielle, had seen me go by on my way there, then had waited for me to pass on my way back. Smart. I should have considered the possibility. I wondered how many bullets Legere’s gun held. I didn’t know anything about guns, but I had held it in my hand and I knew it was not full size. I had a notion that a full-size handgun might hold about twenty rounds. I knew a compact handgun would hold more than six but less than twenty. Maybe twelve? I would not have bet my life on it. He had fired about seven or eight rounds so far. Did he have an extra clip?

I kept moving down the hill. I could hear him following, bounding down the hill after me, his feet sliding in the leaves and dirt with every step. Two more shots rang out.

Interview with Bradley W. Wright

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I have a young adult book working its way through the editing process right now at my publisher Black Opal Books. It’s a near future, science fiction novel written for young teens. It will be released in early 2019. I’m also working on a sequel to my first novel Old Gold Mountain and another YA novel set in the 1980s.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

Old Gold Mountain took me about a year and so did the YA novel I completed after it. I don’t have much free time for writing so the process is slow.

What is your favorite childhood book?

The House at Pooh Corner.

What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve always had a compulsion to create art in one way or another. I began writing fiction after my son was born because it was something I could do whenever I had a few minutes free. Since I started writing I’ve found that it works really well for me. I enjoy crafting books from writing and rewriting (endlessly) individual sentences all the way up to holding an entire plot in my head and thinking through all the ramifications and possibilities.

How long have you been writing?

Aside from a few short stories I wrote when I was in college, I’ve been writing seriously for about three years.

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

My mother was a painter and I used to paint so I’m pretty familiar with the world of galleries, collectors, auction houses, and museums. I had been living in San Francisco for about twelve years when I started writing Old Gold Mountain so that was a natural choice for the setting. Deciding to have a cat burglar as the main character came out of left field. I’m still not sure exactly how that happened. I’ve always been kind of fascinated by cat burglars.

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

I think a major inspiration for Old Gold Mountain was the old Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. I love those books. If you can get past the misogyny and macho posturing, they are well worth reading. A non-fiction book I found very helpful when researching was Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World's Stolen Treasures by Robert K. Whitman
