Inspired by Jesus's parable of the lost sheep, 'Hundredth' is the second book in the 'Pillow Stories from Heaven' series, sharing an imaginative retelling from the lost sheep's perspective. At bedtime with family or in a group, both children and parents will delight in listening to the unusual adventures of Hundredth as he goes from one personal transformation to the next. In the end, 'Hundredth' will lead the audience into deeper reflection and create opportunity for conversation.
Interview with Tom Aish
What was the hardest
scene from your book to write?
Usually it’s setting up of the story—the opening scene. It
should invite the reader into the story and awaken their interest, be simple,
short, and do the
job in style.
Why did you choose to
write in your particular field or genre?
I believe in it. The genre of Hebrew parable is a short
story with a deeper meaning; a story that people can relate to at the same time.
If you write in more
than one genre, how do you balance them?
I do write in more than one. My style is a hybrid of Hebrew
parable and classical Greek story type. But they are related, so I just
take the best of both worlds.
What did you enjoy
most about writing this book?
The story itself—fun, humor, characters.
What book that you
have read has most influenced your life?
No brainer, for me, the Bible—it’s got some great stories
there too.
Tell us a little
about yourself? Perhaps something not many
people know?
My most deepest and darkest secrets that no one knows about,
is: I’m not perfect and often quite insecure.
Can you tell us
something about your book that is not in the
summary?
A Call from Above: I have never been to a chicken farm yet,
but I’d love to one day. All I know about eagles and chickens is from my
research. A Wyoming farmer told me once, they used to sneak eggs into
chicken nests
all the time. I didn’t know it was common practice, when I
wrote the story. Hundredth: I actually went to a sheep farm here in Colorado,
to take some photos. The farm was run by a young couple with little
children. They were
new farmers too. He was retired from the military and just
wanted to get away from it all, to a simpler and more quiet life. His
sheep were Finn sheep breed, and had unusual pupils in the shape of a
horizontal black dash. I have never seen this breed before. They also had an adorable Border Collie named Comet, whom the sheep chased around all
the time. Comet “posed” for my action shots.
