Interview with Kaylene Winter
What made you want to become a writer?
I’ve always been a writer in some capacity. I wrote my first Rockstar Romance many years ago when I was 15. My best girlfriends and I would dream of marrying rockstars one day. So I wrote about it. On an old typewriter. Each night I’d read what I wrote to my friends and we’d dream of what it would be liked to be “that” girl – the one picked out of the crowd.
Well, I was that girl – only on the business side. I became a rock promoter and worked in a management company with some really big bands from the 90’s and LIVED it. I travelled on a bus. Promoted shows. Shopped for record deals. Saw my real-life friends become famous.
Eventually, I decided I wanted some more “stability” and began a different, more corporate life with a twist.
Fast forward to years later, and in my very intense (but fun) worklife, I wanted an escape and rediscovered my love for contemporary romance. And then, lo and behold, Rockstar Romance was a THING! I was so psyched. I devoured every book I could find.
One day, I found that old manuscript in a box of my high school memorabilia. My husband and my two old friends encouraged me to write. The only thing remaining from that original book is the name of the lead singer, Tyson Rainier.
The rest, shall we say, is history. Writing the LTZ series has been one of my biggest joys. Being part of the Rockstar Romance community is amazing.
What inspired you to write Fearless?
Endless was inspired by my original book, but the story itself just fell out of me. So did the characters. Each of the heroines in the book are “inspired” by my friends from back in the day – and I needed to make sure their love interests were worthy.
My newest book, FEARLESS was inspired by a lot of blind items I have followed for many years involving celebrity bearding relationships and the reasons for it. Also, a lot of the #metoo movement is still pervasive across all industries – especially Hollywood. Not just for women, for men too. I wanted Ronni to find the strength and resilience to emerge as the warrior that she is. And for Connor, the alpha-male bassist to show what it means to be with a strong woman – and how supporting that woman in her journey is the greatest gift you can give as a man.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Fearless?
Both Connor and Ronni’s backstories are incredibly important to understanding their motivations in the book.
Each of them were forced, in different ways, to grow up and support their family. As they grow into adulthood, the toll their early experiences take on their relationship and how to navigate it is explored in hopefully a very realistic manner.
Of course there is a ton of travel, and in this case a love letter to my second “country” Ireland. My husband is Irish, we are in Ireland a few weeks a year during normal times – and I’m in love with all of it. Connor is not my husband, but he sure sounds like him sometimes. Just saying...
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
I’ll give a shoutout to a couple of the authors that really made me believe I should start this journey: Mari Carr, who has been incredibly supportive of me. I’m a huge fan (and have never met) Jaine Diamond, Carian Cole and Taryn Elliot/Cari Quinn. Love them.
What has been super incredible is how welcoming the Rockstar Romance authors have been – I’m also such a big fan (and encourage you to check out) Sasha Marshall, Jenna Galicki, Anne Mercier and Jayne Frost. All amazing.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Next up is TIMELESS, this is Zane and Fiona’s story. It should be out in September.
I’m part of a Rockstar Romance Anthology that will be announced soon, releasing at the holiday.
After that – we will follow up with all of our LTZ couples and start delving into their next steps – and some of the new bands they will be working with.
My plan is to keep writing about gorgeous rockers FOREVER!
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I love everything about the writing process. I love how the characters come to life – they speak to me in ways that I can never predict. I love editing – and having my editor help me improve. I love it when fans connect with a book. So, it’s all a joy. A true joy.
