Publication date: February 22nd 2021
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance
His redemption might be her downfall…
Tristan has nothing left to lose. His best friend’s betrayal cost him everything. Now, he’s going to take it back. All he has to do to get the Hawks reinstated to their rightful position at the palace is track down the traitor’s younger sister and turn her over for execution. But Nim’s not the girl Tristan left behind years ago; she’s a stubborn, loyal, beautiful woman, and he can’t stop himself from wanting her.
Nim fled with nothing when the king’s favorite came for her. All she has left is the conviction that her brother is innocent—and her determination to free him. She’ll do anything…even if it means convincing Tristan to help her. But the man he’s become is a far cry from the boy she fell in love with so long ago. He’s formidably stern and deeply untrusting. She’ll just have to hope he still has a heart under that battle-scarred exterior.
When love and duty collide, will Tristan follow his orders or follow his heart?
Tristan, book 1 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.
Interview with Jennie Lynn Roberts, author of Tristan
What made you want to become a writer?
I’ve been writing journals and filling notebooks with poems and story ideas pretty much since I learned how to read and write. I remember sitting at my first proper job interview and being asked what the most significant event of my life had been so far and answering, “Learning to read!”
I love immersing myself in vibrant new worlds and finding characters that I can fall in love with. Writing my own stories takes that to an even deeper level. It’s escapism, a way of giving myself the ‘happy ever after’ that I love, and it’s a way of expressing my thoughts and feelings about the world.
What inspired you to write Tristan?
I wanted to write more seriously, so I started entering writing competitions that gave feedback on submissions. I entered a flash fiction competition where one of the rounds had a fantasy theme and I created Nim—Tristan’s heroine—for that story. Long after the competition was over, she was still in my mind. I found myself imagining more and more of her world. What had happened to make her fly away into the darkness alone? Who else was in the world with her? What would she do next? The story grew from there.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Tristan?
Tristan is a former captain of the palace guard. He’s been demoted and exiled from the palace and he’s angry about it. He’s also been jaded by years of war. But he’s deeply honorable and an excellent military commander, loyal to his friends and committed to doing what is right. He’s a Tarasque—he has emerald scales with pewter rims that flicker over his body when his inner beast senses danger.
Nim is an apothecary who has stayed at home to care for her father. She’s kind and empathetic, but she has a core of inner strength and will fight with everything she has for the people who she loves. Nim is a Mabin—she has wide leathery wings that bleed silver.
The rest of Tristan’s squad, The Hawks, are a band of brothers from different cultures and backgrounds. There are Tarasque, Mabin, Nephilim (gifted by the angels with an array of mystical skills) and Apollyon (the race of the nobility). Each member of the Hawks will get their own stories as the series progresses.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
That’s a difficult question to answer! If you’d asked me twenty years ago, I would have said Tolkien. Ten years ago, I would have said Neil Gaiman and Robin Hobb.
Now… Meljean Brook, Bec McMaster, Lexi Blake, Tessa Dare, Kerrigan Byrne, Kristen Callihan, Nalini Singh, G.A. Aiken, Lisa Kleypas … I couldn’t possibly choose one! (And honestly, I could keep going!)
All of them create gorgeous worlds with characters that live and breathe. They write stories that make me laugh and cry and fall in love.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Tristan was exiled from the palace after King Geraint—who he was protecting—was betrayed and died. The man accused of masterminding the attack is Val (Nim’s brother). Book two of the Hawks is Val and Princess Alanna’s story, and that will be out within the next two months.
Book three, Mathos, follows the story of Tristan’s second in command, and will be out before the summer.
I’m also currently writing the first draft of book four.
After that, I’ve started working on an urban fantasy/paranormal romance that I’m planning to release in the autumn.
It’s going to be an exciting year.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I loved the characters most. They feel real to me, people I would love to be friends with. It was deeply rewarding to give them the happy ever after that they struggled and suffered for. (Except King Ballanor, the villain, I definitely never want to meet him!) And of the best things about fantasy is that you can give your characters the things you wish you could have—like Nim’s gorgeous wings!
Author Bio:
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every strong, kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to support her at every turn, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since.
Jennie would rather be writing than doing anything else—except for spending time with her gorgeous family, of course. But when she isn’t building vibrant new worlds, she can be found nattering with friends, baking up a storm, or strolling in the woods around her home in England.
If you want to talk books, romance, movies, reluctant heroes, or just about anything else with Jennie, feel free to contact her atwww.jennielynnroberts.com. But be prepared to settle in for a long chat if you bring up shifters, vampires, Star Wars, or The Princess Bride….
