What if the fairytale was always a lie?

Seven years after her family’s murders, Eva is attacked by a magical creature and abducted to the faerie realm. When a handsome fae saves her, Bash reveals that he must bring Eva to her faerie soulmate to stop a world-ending Curse. She relents, but only for the opportunity to find answers about her parents’ deaths.

As their journey progresses, Eva delves into her previously hidden magic—and grows steadily closer to Bash. But when she meets her prince, she soon learns that all is not what it seems. While mystery and intrigue surround her, Eva takes it into her own hands to uncover the truth. But what she discovers is beyond her imagination, as she unravels the fae’s web of lies.

Don’t miss this romantasy into the fae realm with hidden secrets, steamy romance, and true fantasy adventure.

Interview with Dana Evyn, The Other Side of the Mirror

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?

I was absolutely obsessed with The Winding Circle series by Tamora Piece in my early teens, and I feel like a lot of those themes and tropes were formative of my tastes in both what I write and what I like to read now. Fantasy, magic, found family, sacrifice for those you love…I’ve never stopped wanting and looking for those literary themes, and they’re an important part of The Other Side of the Mirror.

Like many, Sarah J. Maas was my introduction to romantasy, which absolutely made me think differently about fantasy as a genre and how much I love romance at the heart of it.

How do you select the names of your characters?

They’re a mix of baby names my husband vetoed and names with hidden meanings—either to me personally or in the meaning of the name. For example, Yael (my favorite side character) is my Hebrew name, and Aviel means “God is my father”…which is some subtle foreshadowing I won’t explain.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

Great question! One of my favorite things to do in my books is say things in the language of flowers. So anytime I mention a flower by name, it’s a big fat, fragrant foreshadowing in flower language.

I also hid an Easter egg in the map at the beginning that my husband created for me! I need to figure out a prize for whoever finds it first…

What was your hardest scene to write?

If the number of rewrites are any indication of hardest, I went back and forth on including the prelude at the beginning a few times. I really wrestled with whether to have the reader in on if what happened that night was real or not from the outset. In the end, I decided it was worth it!

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

Absolutely a body of work. The next books in the series won’t make much sense without starting at the first. I love creating a world and being able to build upon it. And there’s so much I have left to explore!

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

I really fell in love with the romantasy genre and wanted to create something uniquely my own while including some of my favorite themes and tropes. I like what came from that, and hopefully my readers will too.

What inspired you to write The Other Side of the Mirror?

You know when you can’t get a story out of your head? Like you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep until you write the bare bones down?

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in The Other Side of the Mirror or what you have planned for the future?

The next book will start right where Mirror leaves off. There are also two new POVs that I’m excited to include in a way that all ties together.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in The Other Side of the Mirror?

The story starts with Eva being attacked by a magical creature. She’s then helped by Bash, a handsome stranger who then brings her to the faerie realm because he’s been tasked to bring Eva to Prince Aviel, the ruler of the faerie realm to break a world-ending curse. There they meet Bash’s cohorts, Yael and Rivan. I won’t give too much away, but if you like romantic tension, fated mates, found family, and a growled “who did this to you?”, you’ll get all of that and more with these characters!

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I really enjoyed seeing where this story took me and finding ways to tackle sensitive topics in a way that resonated. I loved writing an indomitable female lead, a shadow-wielding love interest, some scene-stealing sapphic side characters, and, of course, lots of angst and yearning!
