Goodreads Synopsis:

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. And there are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi's need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

My Review:

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I won a copy of The Near Witch from Hannah @The Book Vortex

A stranger shows up in the town of Near in the middle of the night. He appears on the moor as if a ghost. The Children of Near are disappearing from their beds in the middle of the night. Lexi thinks that it is The Near Witch that is taking the children. The town folk think that it is the stranger. Lexi wants to prove that it is The Near Witch before her little sister disappears. Lexi with the help of her mother has to sneak out because her uncle has forbidden her to go and find the children.

Lexi believed in and trusted the stranger with no name whom she called Cole even if the town folk did not. Cole trusted Lexi also and he helped Lexi in her hunt to find the children. Lexi knew how to track, a skill that her father taught her before his death. Lexi used her tracking skill to help her in her search for the children.

No one in the town of Near liked the two witches, Dreska and Magda, sisters but Lexi's father trusted the sisters. Dreska and Magda had been around for a long time and new the story of The Near Witch. So therefore they could help Lexi figure out what was happening to the children.

At first I kept thinking "no Cole did not take the children" but when Lexi's uncle Otto and the men of Near came and took Cole I thought "well maybe he did" but I knew deep down that he couldn't have. Then I was like "who took the children"? Victoria Schwab writes a beautiful story that keeps you guessing who it is that takes the children. You know along who it is but she still puts that little bit of doubt in your mind.
