Excerpt:
I scanned the crowd, but there was
no sign of them. My stomach lurched, and I swallowed my panic. I moved as
quickly as I could to the place where Reilley had just stood.
To the right was a dim alley with
curtained doors lining the sides. I shot into the shady street.
“Reilley?” I called and received no
answer.
Up ahead, a curtain covered the
light that spilled into the alley. I rushed for that doorway. Ripping open the
curtain, I lunged inside.
In the small room, two men sat on
crates playing cards on a box in between them. They looked up as I entered.
“Where is he?”
Neither responded as they returned
to their game. I spotted a door at the back of the room and barreled toward it.
The two men moved to stop me.
“I don’t have time for this,” I told
them as they blocked my way.
The one closest to the door I wanted
to get through crossed his thick arms over his chest and lifted his chin, looking
down at me with a smirk. His wirier friend stepped toward me and pointed the
way I’d come.
“This party is closed,” he said with
a heavy accent. “If you don’t have an invitation, leave.”
“I just need to get my friend. Then,
I’ll leave.”
He shook his head and grabbed my
upper arm to escort me out. “You will leave now.”
I rotated my elbow and broke his
grip then pulled back and drove the heel of my hand into his nose.

What inspired you to write The Exiled Otherkin?
I’m really into steampunk, and I wanted to try my hand at it. My friends in the
Kenosha Steampunk Society encouraged me and helped me brainstorm some of the
steampunk gadgets in the story. As for the characters, Ember and Reilley’s
personalities were inspired by characters from the anime Karneval. Also, I
always loved to read faerie tales, and I’d never read a steampunk story with
fae.
Can you tell us a little bit what you
have planned for the future?
My
next novel is scheduled to be published on June 21, 2018. It’s a paranormal
romance called Intended Bondmates:
Vampires
may feed on humans, but nothing is as irresistible to them as fae blood.
Runa
has long given up on being content with her life. Her only goal is to protect
Mikhail until he awakens and gains his full magic. For the last thirteen years,
ever since tragedy struck when they were children, she has protected him as was
expected of his werewolf guardian. Though she has started looking for a mate,
she can’t imagine what will happen once she’s free of Mikhail. But when he
requests to be unbound from her before his awakening, she’s given the chance to
return to her intended bondmate.
She
expects a warm welcome from Konner, not foreseeing his bitterness at having
been abandoned. Konner isn’t the only one who is bitter. His brother’s
guardian, Rowan, has had to protect both faelings while she was with Mikhail.
It’s
up to Runa to find a way to soothe these two demanding males if she hopes to
make up for her past betrayals.
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in The
Exiled Otherkin?
The
protagonist, Ember, is an apathetic half-fae who is exiled from Faerie when her
father dies. She’s more than capable of taking care of herself and actively
tries not to get too attached to people.
Enter
Reilley, a naïve young man who cares more about others than taking care of
himself. When he meets Ember he immediately attaches himself to her, to her
chagrin.
The main antagonist is Ember’s stepmother and the queen of Faerie, Helena. She
hates everything about humans, going so far as to exile human sympathizers from
Faerie. She has a particular hatred for Ember and takes pleasure in finding
creative ways to isolate and torment her.
You know I think we all have a favorite
author. Who is your favorite author and why?
That’s
a really tough question, and I would say it really depends on genre. However,
if I really have to choose, I’d say my overall favorite author is Alexandre
Dumas. He has a way of weaving many threads into his stories that is just
unparalleled. I also like the historical settings and characters.
If you could time-travel would you
travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you
like to visit this particular time period?
There
are so many places I would want to go in the past. I’d want to go visit people
who lived in an oral tradition, the druids for instance. There is so much we
don’t know about those cultures because they didn’t write anything down. The
accounts of their lives were usually recorded by their enemies.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends?
Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I do. I have a dog, Samwise, and a cat, Yin. They fill my life with warm
cuddles and laughter.

My Review:
After being exiled from her home after the death of her
father half-fae Ember takes a job on an airship a rigger. She has to inspect
the sails to make sure they have no tears and fix them. One night after
returning to the ship she over hears someone talking about taken the cargo.
Over hearing this conversation puts in danger and someone tries to kill her.
Their ship is over taken by pirates and just as Ember and
her new friends are about to board their ship it is blown to pieces leaving them
in the hands of the pirates. When the pirate ship runs into trouble they have
to crash land in a field. Ember and Reilley escape with the help from their
friend Charlie.
Ember met Reilley before she started her new job on the
airship. She found Reilley in an alley being beaten by a couple of dudes. Ember
beat them and saved Reilley’s life afterwards he followed her everywhere she
went. She was even rude to him telling him to go away and leave her alone but
he wouldn’t listen. He followed her to the airship and landed a job as a cook
on the ship.
Ember and Reilley went from town to town looking for ways to
make money and meeting new people along the way that was always very happy to
help them. Ember always protecting Reilley and Reilley protecting Ember. I
really enjoyed this little story. It was a nice turnaround from the man being
the strongest and protecting and saving the woman.
I would recommend The Exiled Otherkin to anyone who love a
good fantasy or who like to read about the fae. Come join Ember, Reilley and Charlie
as we follow them through the human realm and then into the fae realm.
