VBT + #Giveaway: Food Junkies by Vera Tarman & Phil Werdell Read by Lisa Bunting @FoodJunkiesBook @GoddessFish

Food Junkies
by Vera Tarman & Phil Werdell
Read by Lisa Bunting
GENRE: Non-Fiction, self-help

BLURB:

Is it possible to be addicted to food? When does indulging in 'comfort' food become substance abuse? Is it possible that there is more than a lack of will power at work when someone can't stop eating? In Food Junkies, Vera Tarman and Phil Werdell explain what is - and isn't - food addiction, tackling this complex and poorly understood problem through the stories of many survivors and from the perspectives of medical researchers/practitioners. They break down the science behind the research so that anyone can understand it, and take a fresh look at obesity, overeating, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. For people struggling with these issues — and their families — recognizing the condition is the first step to gaining the kind of support and advice they need.

Food Junkies (finalist in the 2016 Voice Arts Awards) offers hope and guidance. Read by Lisa Bunting, according to one audible customer review, her "calming voice assists with decreasing the shame so often found with addiction and can open the listener up to actually hearing," while another noted the audiobook version "brought the science to life in a different way than the book. It made it even more real as one can't 'skim' or 'rush' through the life-changing content."

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Have you ever had an imaginary friend?

Not in the classical sense that this question implies. I have always been a reader, and the characters in my books that I read as a child were like friends to me. Ie Anne of Green Gables, Trixie Beldon, Ponyboy (from the Outsiders) was people that populated my mental life, and I often pretended they were with me thought the day. I would reread these books just to ‘be with them’.

Do you have any phobias?

Yes, I detest the phone. It is no small matter since phone work is important aspect of my office duties.  I willingly take calls for emergencies or to make plans, but the moment the conversation turns to ‘chit chat’, I start to squirm and try to get off the phone. I literally sweat.  I allocate most of my phone work to my staff. But I love email!

Do you listen to music when you're writing?

Only when I don't have to think of what I am writing. There is a lot of rote writing that I do ie reports, consultations, and I will listen to music when drawing these up. But listening to music when I am trying to be creative would side track me. I need to have complete silence when I am in the ‘zone’ of writing. Music from my neighbors or from the cars driving by drives me crazy.

Do you ever read your stories out loud?

Absolutely and always! This makes the material alive for me. Savoring the words out loud is what allows me to enjoy my writing.  I don't even write reports without reading them out loud. I am much more of an audible than visual person.

Tell us about your main character and who inspired him/her.

I am the main character.  Food Junkies is both a science / clinical book, but also a memoir of sorts. I do write about other characters, but it is my own experience of struggling with food addiction that has fueled my book and my passion.
