Men and women of the armed forces experience desire and love pretty much like everyone else. Except, well, there is that uniform. And the hard-to-resist attraction of "duty, honor, service" as a man might apply them to a woman's pleasure. All things considered, romance among the military is a pretty sexy, compelling force for which you'd better be armed, whether weighing anchor and moving forward into desire, dropping anchor and staying put for passion, or setting a course for renewed love with anchor home.

Interview with Dee S. Knight

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Naval Maneuvers?

Naval Maneuvers is composed of three novellas that make up a full length novel. Each novella has one location and character that is referenced or continues into the next story, but each story is stand-alone.

In the first novella, Weighing Anchor, Melissa Crandall is a doctor who was raised in the Marine Corps. She knows from personal experience the hardships most military families face and she's determined not to put herself or any future children through those same difficulties. She avoids dating anyone in the service. Unfortunately, she didn't know that David Stimson was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy until it was too late.

In Dropping Anchor, Super Chief Todd Baxter is used to taking care of himself. He's an independent guy, married to the Navy. Then he meets a beautiful lawyer and suddenly he's not so sure he wants to be on his own anymore. It's a shock for both Todd and Carissa Walker, a JAG attorney, when they discover their love is forbidden by the Navy because she's an officer but not a gentlemen and he's a gentleman but not an officer.

Finally, in Anchor Home, Lieutenant Sam Turner not only ruins into his old love from high school, he's forced to work with her for a couple of weeks in a school/military awareness program. Pat Welles is even more shocked than Sam when they come face to face. She has a secret she's petrified he'll find out, and then there's the fact that she still loves him.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I'm currently working on book 2 of a trilogy. The Good Man series centers around a set of identical triplets—Jonah, Daniel, and Mark Goodman. Daniel is so goal-oriented he doesn't remember how to relax and enjoy life. Jonah is so averse to commitment he seems to have no goals. And Mark, a bona fide genius, seems to operate on a different plane altogether. Each wil find a woman he needs to make his life complete. I hope, lol. That's the plan.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

It depends on what's going on in life and how wrapped up my mind is with the story. I've written 90+K word books in a month and taken three months to write a 30K word novella. I guess I need a better process!

What is your favorite childhood book?

It's been a while! I loved Misty of Chincoteague when we moved to Virginia (around the third grade). I loved it but even living so close, I never got to see the pony roundup, darn it! And of course I loved Little Women.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Naval Maneuvers who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I think I'd like to spend the day with Todd from Dropping Anchor. He's a down-to-earth kind of guy. Confident, interested in taking care of a woman, listening to her, and with a great sense of humor. He's from Asheville, NC, where my dad was from, and lives in Norfolk, Virginia where we lived for the nine years my dad was stationed there. I think he'd be fun.

What was the hardest scene from Naval Maneuvers to write?

I think the scene from Anchor Home when Pat tells Sam that he has a son he never knew. She did a very bad thing and for which there's no excuse, though she thought at the time she was trying to make things easier for him.

What made you want to become a writer?

I'm not sure I ever wanted to become a writer—until I started writing. It's not very inspirational, but I really began writing because I had time on my hands and a very active imagination. I think the biggest surprise was how much I enjoyed writing, and how addictive it became.

About the Author

A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex. Writing was so much fun Dee decided to keep at it. That's how she spends her days. Her nights? Well, she's lucky that her dream man, childhood sweetheart, and long-time hubby are all the same guy, and nights are their secret. Dee loves writing erotic romance and sharing her stories with you. She hopes you enjoy!
