Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Oasis by Bharat Krishnan @bharatkrishnan9 @GoddessFish

Oasis
by Bharat Krishnan
GENRE: Fantasy

BLURB:

Once, there was a truce. Desperaux controlled the west with magic, and Desire claimed the east with steel and science.

But now magic has disappeared, and the world has changed.

The kingdom of Desire will stop at nothing to maintain the new world order. On Juno’s wedding day, their Mengery soldiers came marching through the Nine desert to rip his world apart. Now he journeys east with his adopted brother, Trey, in search of revenge after the murder of his family. Along the way, the two face bandits and the magical creatures of the Nine. When they finally reach Desire, Juno and Trey will face something even deadlier – their own fears and ambitions.

This is a tale of brotherhood, a revenge story that will remind you that everything has a cost – a cost that will be paid to Desire and to the inner demons that govern us all.

Excerpt:

Sand and sun dirtied anything that wasn’t already stained by the Nine, but Trey still tried to keep his hair clean. It was one of the few things he could control in this life, and he’d be damned if anyone at the orphanage said he wasn’t an individual. Soon after the owners of the orphanage died, he broke the lock into their bedroom and found a cooling unit with enough power left to experience a different world for five minutes. He hadn’t told anyone it still had power, not even Drea. He just cranked it up to full power one morning before anyone else had woken up and pretended he was a king.

As clean as Trey was, Sora was dirty. He stood 5’5 with mangy black hair, and was pudgy despite the fact he’d lived his entire life in the orphanage with virtually no food. Trey knew he was stealing rations from the younger kids. The second evidence came to light, Trey would throw Sora out. He was a thief, Trey thought, and beyond that he had hurt Drea. But for now, the two were the only ones who could keep this place running.

And so Trey and Sora would continue to work together because Trey believed in such a thing as obligation. Power shouldn’t be limitless; just because he and Sora were in charge, didn’t mean they should get to live better than everyone else. And Sora had his uses. Where he was strict, Sora was relaxed. Where he was hard, Sora was soft.

Interview with Bharat Krishnan

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Oasis?

Like I think is the case with any author, the characters are all based on me or people I know. The ones that I hope readers are most drawn to include two adopted brothers who are best friends on a mission for revenge, a double agent with a magic sword who looks like a sumo wrestler, a princess who understands what compromise means, and a warrior who’s comfortable playing second fiddle in a larger game.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I’ve got a couple ideas rummaging around my brain, including a novella that is low-fantasy and involves drugs conceptualized as white privilege.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

I think if it takes you longer than a month to get an idea out on paper fleshed out then it’s probably going to be an issue for you.

What is your favorite childhood book?

S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders was the first book that made me feel like it was okay to be different and that feeling alone is a universal sentiment.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Oasis who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

Revi, an old friend of King Norcon’s who mentors Trey and teaches him how to cook. I love cooking so I had to include a character like that. Revi has a heart of gold too. We would haggle together at the market and he’d teach me how to cook horuc meat and make hot sauce from the blood of these winged animals called wind chimes.

What was the hardest scene from Oasis to write?

Hands down, the opening of chapter two which is the introduction to all the creatures of the Nine. For the longest time, it read like a biology textbook. I hope I got it right at the end; if you can make it past that, it gets much better I promise!

What made you want to become a writer?

I absolutely love reading, and in the past few years I’ve wondered why certain stories don’t exist. So I decided to write them. It’s incredibly cathartic for me too, and cheaper than therapy.

Just for fun

(a Favorite song: Shut Up and Dance is a very personal song to me.

(b Favorite book: Impossible to pick just one, but books I keep coming back to are The Outsiders and The Godfather

(c Favorite movie: Air Force One

(d Favorite tv show: I suppose I’d have to say the Office since it’s my go-to show on Netflix. The last show I binged, though, was Season 3 of Daredevil. I actually binged it once by myself and then again with my fiancĂ©e.

(e Favorite Food: Oh man, this is way too hard. My comfort food is rasam chadam, which is basically Basmati rice with lentils.

(f Favorite drink: Seltzer water from a company like Polar

(g Favorite website: Twitter. It is as nutritional as candy and as corrosive as reality TV, it is corroding our democracy, but it is still a better source of information than cable news and people on there can be quite funny.

Thanks so much for visiting with us today!

First off, thanks for having me on your blog!

To your question, Bernie, my most anticipated release is Jade War by Fonda Lee. I would also be very happy with the sequel to The Rage of Dragons.
