Rule one: Don’t look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.

But I did, and now it’s too late.

From the author of The Guild Codex: Spellbound comes a new series that will plunge an unprepared young woman into the darkest magic of the mythic world.

My Review:

Robin Page lost her parents six months ago and after their passing she had to move in with her uncle and his family as he sold her house right out from under her. She has to depend on her uncle for all her needs for now. Well at least until she can do something about it. Her uncle is in charge of her parent’s estate and he keeps giving her the run around about her inheritance.

The one thing Robin wants the most from her inheritance is her mother’s grimoire it has been passed down from mother to daughter through the generations. Robin never wanted to live with her uncle and will get her own place just as soon as she gets her hands on her mother’s grimoire. She has searched the house from top to bottom looking for it. She is afraid to ask her uncle for it as she is afraid he will sell it too.

Her search for the grimoire takes her to the basement where the library is located. Upon reaching the basement/library she soon finds that the library holds more than just books. In the far corner she sees a demon that is trapped inside a magical circle.

The demon doesn’t bother Robin all that much I mean he is trapped there and he can’t hurt her, right? Robin came there to read and wasn’t going to let an old demon distract her from her mission. Robin wonders how many people would read with a demon sitting next to them but she figures that no one loved reading as much as she did.

When Robin is caught in the basement with the demon her uncle forbids her to visit the demon again but Robin is not one to follow the rules and do what she is told. Robin needs to find her mother’s grimoire and will not let anything stand in her way.

Besides after being told to stay away from the demon her curiosity is piqued. Robin has a very inquiring mind that needs answers to a lot of questions like who is this creature/demon. How did he get here? Why is he here? Who summoned him? What kind of havoc can or will he cause if he escapes from his prison or released?

Taming Demons for Beginners is the first book in The Guild Codex world that I have had the pleasure of reading and even the first book by Annette Marie that I have read. I fell in love with this world from the first page.

Taming Demons for Beginners started off with action on the first page and never let up. I loved the demon and Robin. I think they go well together and make a cute couple. I think there is more to this demon than meets the eye. I can’t wait to read more from this world and from these characters.

I can’t wait to see what Robin and Zylas has in store for us in the next book Slaying Monsters for the Feeble. I am anxiously waiting on the next book to arrive. You know I really liked Taming Demons for Beginners way more than I ever thought I would. While I wait I need to check out these other books by Annette Marie that reviewers are talking so much about and giving such high praise The Guild Codex: Spellbound series.

Do I recommend Taming Demons for Beginners? You bet I highly recommend it to all fans of fantasy, demons and magic.

Author Bio:

Annette Marie is the author of Amazon best-selling YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
