We Come With Vengeance
H.G. Muralee
Publication date: March 14th 2023
Genres: Adult, Steampunk

The war has stretched on for twenty years, and the soldiers, civilians, and nobles are exhausted. Towns grow more desolate while war technology continues to advance, leaving the rest of Kaier behind.

Felix—heir to House Leigh-Van—harbors resentment for the war that has claimed his sister’s life and his father’s ethics. Regardless, he follows his orders and is content to remain equal among his fellow soldiers.

When a routine stop for repairs puts Felix at the epicenter of a brutal attack impacting civilians rather than soldiers, he struggles to continue separating his ethics from his duty. He’s privately ambivalent but publicly supportive of his uncle—the king—when whispers of an underground rebellion start to circulate. The rebellion is gaining traction and could soon make a serious play at ending the war.

But when even the tactics of the resistance begin claiming lives as quickly as the war itself, Felix starts to wonder who will survive to see the peace they’re fighting for.

Interview with H.G. Muralee

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

We Come With Vengeance is my first published book, but I have three other completed first drafts. As of right now, the prequel to my upcoming novel is my favorite because I get to explore the antihero more than I did in We Come With Vengeance.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

Since this is a series, I have a few sequels planned. The one I’m currently working on is Murrugun’s. He’s the comedic relief and my favorite character. His book is going to be more lighthearted while still dealing with the overall theme of most of the books in this series: grief.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

We Come With Vengeance is a standalone, and none of the other books will need to be read to understand its contents. The prequel leads into that book. I’m working on the sequels right now, and while they might be able to stand on their own, I think it would be more beneficial to read the books preceding each one.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

We Come With Vengeance is one of the quotes spoken by one of the characters.

How long did it take you to write this book?

The original concept of this book was born nine years ago. The finished product doesn’t resemble the original draft. If we’re just talking about the first draft when I reworked the original idea, it took me a year. With betas and the different types of editing, I would say nearly two years.

What does the title mean?

I wanted something that invoked an emotion which is why “We Come With Vengeance” was chosen. It doesn’t have any deeper meaning other than I thought it was a great title.

What did you learn when writing the book?

Always have a plan. It’s much easier to write a book if you know the entire plot, even if it’s a basic outline.

What surprised you the most?

There’s always more work to be done when a book is coming out. Writing is only the tip of the iceberg. You have: setting up a business if you go that route, making a website, posting on social media, and scheduling book tours, among other things. It’s incredibly time consuming.

Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

I have! I don’t like killing off too many characters so when I do, I want it to mean something.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I create backstories for each of my characters so I can understand how they would approach each situation in the book. With their education and background, I can craft how I think they would speak and implement that throughout the text.
