Interview with Author Jason Primrose
As
a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
I always loved Dragons. Fierce, powerful,
depending on what universe you’re in fiercely intelligent and noble. Often
imbued with magic properties, they are limitless. I want to believe I’m imbued
with magic and limitless too.
How
many hours a day do you put into your writing?
Not enough. LOL jk. I try to put in at least
three to four hours into writing a day during the work week and double to
triple that on weekends. Sometimes the juice doesn’t flow the way you want, I
try not to force it when that happens.
Do
you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the
future?
Always. I like to hear/read people’s opinions.
It gives me perspective on how my writing and the story are being received.
Sometimes there are great takeaways, like, I think my chapters could be a bit
shorter and I could cut back on description. Other times, I feel like the
content wasn’t a fit for someone and I can’t help that. I’ll always stand by my
work knowing I put out my best at the time and knowing I’ll get better with
practice, but it does impact my organization and in some cases my structure.
The storyline and series, however, are not subject to criticisms. Both are
etched in stone.
Do
you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Absofrickinlutely. I always wonder if people
will find the little secrets I plant in my prose. It’s really fun to string
themes together in that way. It might be a repeated phrase, or a physical
characteristic of a character, or a piece of information that pertains to
another book or future character. I reference them in my live readings of Zosma and during Q + A’s to see who
picked up on them. I always get giddy if people have.
Can
you tell us a little bit about the characters in Zosma?
There are a number of characters in Zosma, it
reminds me a lot of my life. With so many personalities and motivations moving
parallel, perpendicular or straight up against you, how do you make sense of
the world? The pursuit of understanding and perspective. If you walk into Zosma
with no expectations, hoping to meet new characters you might fall in love and
root for, then I believe you’ll enjoy the ensemble cast of superhumans and
aliens. I don’t like to play favorites but I LOVE Zosma, second to her is
Allister. Hopefully, you’ll see why!
Can
you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the
future?
Of course! I can tell you that there are seven
books in the Lost Children of Andromeda series and I’m halfway through number
2. (Super excited!!) The next books after Zosma
really start to unpack the direction we are going as a planet and a society,
and call each character to choose their position -- are they for, or against
humanity. It’s more than about race, gender, sexuality, religion, it’s about
evaluating our trajectory and steering toward an evolved thought process and
purposeful existence. Expect to experience this universe in ways you didn’t
think were possible.
Do
you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long
as the words come?
Words are always swirling in my head. I record a
lot of voicenotes when I’m driving or write things in my notes if I’m away from
my computer. I try to set aside time at night to write because that’s when I’m
most creative (I mean, isn’t everybody). If I’m in a good writing flow, I won’t
stop. For anything. Not sleep, not a birthday, not food, not social media.
Do
you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
A page a day keeps the insanity away. At least a
page!
What
inspires you to write?
I’m constantly inspired by the world we live in
and the people living in it. I am grateful for the beauty and the turmoil, the
damage and the delight. Everything is magical and wonderous, even at its worst.
My friends, family, strangers, anything I can observe is reason to put pen to
paper, or fingers to keyboard these days. I must write to survive!
