This third book in the Egypt trilogy wraps up the lives of the characters in a neat and satisfying way, according to some readers. Like the rest of the series, the story is set in the beautiful twin- island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The two main characters, Marva and June, have come out of an abusive childhood (Egypt) and are now adults. Marva is a nun at a home for delinquent girls. Marva is known for being strict and well disciplined, but when her adoptive father is killed in a Muslim coup, the family relies on Marva’s levelheaded calm to help them get through their crisis. But little do they know that Marva has a crisis of her own, one that her discipline and her faith seem inadequate to handle.

Interview with Author Angela Joseph

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I would choose my daughter’s shih tzu. He is smart, loving and gentle, like me.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

I have never checked. It all depends on what else I have going on that day. Some days I may spend all morning; at other times it may just be an hour or so. It all depends on how the thoughts flow.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

I do read my reviews. I can’t say they affect what I write in the future, but I remember one review of my first book mentioned something they would have liked to see as part of the resolution. It turned out I’d already written it in the sequel.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

I don’t think so.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in In the Promised Land?

Okay, I’ll start with Marva, the protagonist. She is a young nun at a home for girls. Her character has evolved from that of an impulsive, angry teenager into a levelheaded, disciplined young woman who loves God and tries to live for Him.

June, Marva’s younger sister, has also changed from the wild, fickle boy-crazy teenager she was in the first book to a more mature and studious law student with the goal of helping abused girls. However, her undoing is that she is still too beautiful for her own good and too appealing to the opposite sex.

Cicely, Marva’s former teacher, now turned adoptive mother to Marva and June and loves them as if they were her own. She is married to David, the detective, and they have twins.

David, Cicely’s husband, is stern, every inch the detective, but sympathizes with the plight of the two sisters and readily agrees to adopt them.

Derek, David’s son by his first marriage, the impetuous, reckless heart throb who sets June’s heart on fire.

Jason, a widower, steady, reliable, good-looking, has always had a romantic interest in Marva.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I have just completed the first draft of another women’s fiction, which deals with three women who live together, are very close, but each one has a secret. As always happens, they are eventually forced to disclose their secrets, but the secrets, although troubling, help to deepen their friendship. I’m still trying to decide between looking for an agent for this novel or self-publishing. I also have a romance novella I started some time ago. I plan to dust it off, complete it and self-publish. I have no immediate plans to write another novel, but that may change. I want to focus on my freelance writing business.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

I never set a time limit to write. However, most days I aim at writing 1000 words. Sometimes I make that (and more), sometimes I don’t. I try not to pressure myself.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?

As above

What inspires you to write?

Things I see in the news, watching people, my own experiences, even a scenery can inspire me. The world to me is a wide-open storybook. You just have to reach out and grab the pages that appeal to you and rearrange them in your own fashion.
