Interview with Author Lisa Shumate

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

The turtle. Steady and persistent.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

My writing is kind of like my workout habit, not as often as I like, but when I do, it is with full commitment. I write 2–3 times a week for 2–4 hours at a time.

Do you read your book reviews?

If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?  As a first time author, reviews are a new phenomenon. I plan to treat reviews as I would any other feedback—always listen and make course corrections when you receive the same constructive criticism from multiple sources. Learn from it and adapt without losing your creative intuition.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

My genre is non-fiction and my goal is to write advice and guidance that are clear, actionable, and easy to apply in your life.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Always and Never?

The main character in Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart is YOU the reader.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future

Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart will be followed by Always and Never for a Confident Heart, then Healing Heart and Helping Heart. All written to encourage self-reflection and offer guidance and encouragement in daily life.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

I don’t write to a timing deadline—I keep going until I like what’s on paper. Just as much time is spent editing as generating original thoughts. To me the challenge and sense of accomplishment come from putting it all together.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?

I try to write a chapter at a time, but that doesn’t always work out. Once I get going, it’s difficult to stop in the middle and my preference is to take a chapter to closure. Sometimes, the words don’t come and you just have to walk away from it for a day or so.

What inspires you to write?

I tend to fixate on an idea. For Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart, I was thinking about how happiness comes from within and certain truths about the way you live. I was inspired to come up with universal concepts that would stand the test of time. Right now, I’m writing and observing behavior around confidence. I’m inspired by learning and sharing ideas that can help people searching for encouragement and advice.
