An aspiring teenage singer finds herself playing a different tune when she falls for a boy who could jeopardize her future dreams in Olivia Wildenstein’s romantic YA novel, Not Another Love Song.
Angie has studied music her entire life, nurturing her talent as a singer. Now a high school senior, she has an opportunity to break into Nashville’s music scene via a songwriting competition launched by her idol, Mona Stone. Discouraged by her mother, who wishes Angie would set more realistic life goals, she nonetheless pours her heart and soul into creating a song worthy of Mona.
But Angie’s mother is the least of her concerns after she meets Reedwood High’s newest transfer student, Ten. With his endless collection of graphic tees, his infuriating attitude, smoldering good looks, and endearing little sister, Ten toys with the rhythm of Angie’s heart.
She’s never desired anything but success until Ten entered her life. Now she wants to be with him and to be a songwriter for Mona Stone, but she can’t have both.
And picking one means losing the other.
Interview with Olivia Wildenstein
For those
interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where
should they start?
Not Another Love Song is
centered around Angie Conrad, a 17 year-old girl with huge ambitions:
becoming a music superstar. Although there are a few themes in my
novel, success is my central one. Or rather the personal meaning of
success for various characters, and how it can evolve over time, and
usually does evolve.
How did you become
involved with the subject or theme of your book?
This book revolves around a timely
issue: the place of women in our modern world, the place they are
given and the place they make for themselves. Although Not Another
Love Song centers around teenage Angie and her ambitions, it’s
truly a transgenerational story. That of mothers and the sacrifices
they make for their careers or for their families. How much they are
willing to give up and how much they end up having to give up.
What were your
goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you
achieved them?
My goal was to show that when it
comes to achieving your dreams, there are no wrong choices, but that
every choice carries a consequence. If you can live with that
consequence, then you’ve made the right choice.
Anything you would like to say to
your readers and fans?
Never stop going after your dreams,
but do brake from time to time to check you’re still going in the
right direction.
What did you enjoy most about
writing this book?
The romance! I loved building Ten
and writing his nascent love story with Angie. Those first
butterflies. That first kiss and first heartbreak. All those raw
firsts teenagers get to experience.
Can you tell us a little bit about
your next books or what you have planned for the future?
On the indie side of my career, I’m
writing the sequel to Feather,
a dark angel romance that came out in January, and adding a spinoff
to my shifter romance series, The
Boulder Wolves.
On the trad side, I have a
contemporary romance I am dying to write, but since I haven’t yet
pitched it to Swoon, I’ll abstain from talking about it. All I’ll
say is Seven Pounds . . .
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing for 11 years now
but published only for 5. Yes, it took me 6 years to take the plunge
and hit publish.
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in NOT ANOTHER LOVE SONG?
It’s a fun crowd. You have Angie,
my extremely driven and slightly quirky main character. Her sworn
enemy Ten (short for Tennessee), who’ll end up swooping her off her
feet. His little sister Nev (short for Nevada . . . yes, the siblings
are both named after US states) who idolizes Angie. Angie’s best
friend, uber-popular and uber-smart Rae, who’s fiercely loyal.
Angie’s single mother, Jade, who’d sacrifice everything for her
daughter. And then you have Mona Stone, Nashville’s sweetheart, the
woman Angie longs to become until she understands what it takes to
achieve her level of success.
If you could spend the day with one
of the characters from NOT ANOTHER LOVE SONG, who would it be?
Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you
would go and what you would do.
I’d spend my day with superstar
Mona Stone, not because I think she’d be a particularly friendly
person but because I think she’d be an extremely interesting
person. I’d want to hear her story; I’d want to grill her on her
life choices. Understand if she had any regrets or if she’d do it
all over. Also, since I love music, getting a private concert would
be a dream come true.
Author Bio:
USA TODAY bestselling author Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York City and earned her bachelor’s in comparative literature from Brown University. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded in her tools for the writing life, which made more sense considering her college degree.
When she’s not sitting at her computer, she’s psychoanalyzing everyone she meets (Yes. Everyone), eavesdropping on conversations to gather material for her next book, and attempting not to forget one of her kids in school.
She has a slight obsession with romance, which might be the reason why she writes it. She’s a hybrid author of over a dozen mature Young Adult love stories.
