When a fire cuts off a popular trail in the Oregon forest, a small group trapped by the flames must find another way out―or die―in Playing with Fire, an unrelenting teen-vs-nature YA thriller by New York Times bestselling author April Henry.

Natalia is not the kind of girl who takes risks. Six years ago, she barely survived the house fire that killed her baby brother. Now she is cautious and always plays it safe. For months, her co-worker Wyatt has begged her to come hiking with him, and Natalia finally agrees.

But when a wildfire breaks out, blocking the trail back, a perfect sunny day quickly morphs into a nightmare. With no cell service, few supplies, and no clear way out of the burning forest, a group of strangers will have to become allies if they’re going to survive. Hiking in the dark, they must reach the only way out―a foot bridge over a deep canyon―before the fire catches them.

My Review:

Natalia and a co-worker, Wyatt set out on their first date hiking on a Trail in the Oregon forest. Natalia has a crush on Wyatt but he doesn’t know and she has no idea how he feels about her. This is Natalia’s first time hiking. Natalia just liked being with Wyatt she didn’t care what they were doing as long as they were doing it together.

Some time during their hike they come upon a fire in the forest. They soon find their way to the car and the parking lot blocked by the fire, They have to try and find another way out of the forest. Along the way they run into other hikers that have been caught by the fire. The survivors must work together as a team if they are going to fight their way out.

Natalia has a secret that she doesn't talk about, she is afraid of fire. Six years ago Natalia and her little brother was home alone when a fire broke out in their home. Natalia tried her best to save her little brother but he died during their escape. Natalia has suffered tremendously ever since.

But Natalia steps up during her time in the fire and does her best to help the others that are caught in the fire. Natalia took courses in first aid after the fire that killed her little brother so she would be able to help people if they needed her help. Natalia brings her own first aid kit along with her on the hike just in case. Good thing she did, right?

I wonder if Natalia was trying to redeem herself by taking the first aid courses. I wonder if she was thinking or maybe even subconsciously thinking that if she could help people then it might help to make up for what she did as she felt that she was responsible for her little brother’s death. Or maybe it just made her feel better. Or maybe it helped her to heal to help others.

Playing with Fire started out with a bang and never let up. The action of the hikers being chased by the fire kept the pages turning. I could just see the fire blazing up higher and higher getting bigger and bigger. I could hear the trees popping and cracking as the fire surrounded them. I could see the smoke as it surround Natalia, Wyatt and the other hikers. I could hear them as the smoke choked them making them cough and their eyes water as the heat of the fire got hotter and hotter.

I would recommend Playing with Fire to anyone looking for a good mystery or thriller. One-click your copy of Playing with Fire today!
