Beware — dressing up as Napoleon can get you killed!
Provence baker Julie Cavallo, her sous chef, and her grandma sign up for a Napoleonic re-enactment at a nearby chateau.
The event includes theatricals, war games, and costume balls — all courtesy of the host and pillar of the local community, Baron Gustave Cordes d’Auzon.
What a welcome break from baking and catering...
and from pining for a tall, dark, and unsociable captain of the gendarmerie.
Unlike the captain, the weekend guests at the castle love conversing. Some are so flamboyant they outshine even Julie’s badass grandma Rose!
It’s all fun and cosplay… until the lord of the castle turns up dead.
Three unlikely culprits plead guilty.
Each gives the gendarmes a different motive.
Each insists they did it alone.
Who’s lying? And why?
And who really killed the baron?
If you’re a fan of Murder on the Orient Express and country house mysteries, then you’ll love this book. It will regale you with a dogged amateur sleuth, a puzzling ensemble of suspects, and a tangled web of lies.
My Review:
Provence baker Julie Cavallo, her sous chef, and her grandma sign up for a Napoleonic re-enactment at a nearby chateau where the competition is fierce and can be deadly.
It seems that Julie’s grandma is not the only one who takes the Napoleonic re-enactments very serious and will challenge anyone to a duel over their roles in the re-enactment and/or their beliefs about Napoleon.
Everything is going well until the lord of the castle turns up dead. Never fear Julie Cavallo is on the case. She doesn’t have to look too far for the killer as she has plenty of suspects especially when she has three people confess to killing the lord of the castle.
So, now we have three suspects. Which of the three killed this dude? Did either one of them kill the lord of the castle? If so which one? What was their motive? Julie has the suspects now she just has to figure out which one did it.
I just love the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries and just as the first three books in the series The Shady Chateau is jammed packed with mystery and suspense that kept the pages turning.
The characters in The Shady Chateau are so well described that I could just see them all in my head in their costumes. I could see them standing around the crime scene as Julie tried to put all the pieces together.
Each and every scene is portrayed so vividly that I could see it all playing out in my head as if I was right there looking upon each and every scene and character as if I was a part of their world. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries The Perils of Paris to see what mystery our favorite sleuth Julie Cavallo finds herself involved in.
I highly recommend The Shady Chateau to all mystery-solving crime fans! One-click your copy of The Shady Chateau as well as the rest of the Julie Cavallo Investigates mysteries today and help solve a mystery or two!
