The Mulberry Mansion harbors more than one peculiar mystery. Vintage circus freak decor, oddly decorated bed chambers, and sensational sandwiches are just the beginning of the phenomena. Deep within the attic, twelve-year-old Cloette and her brother, Rocco, discover a twisted glowing blanket fort magically hovering, luring them to enter. From within, they uncover the "Ticklish Tome", an enchanted ticklish book that sucks them away into the eerie realm of Neverwood.
The remarkable land is under an unusual incantation from the wildly wicked Wretched Harridan and is in need of help only the siblings can provide. But the reluctant heroes doubt their abilities to help against such a devilish fearsome foe. With their one chance to break the spell quickly approaching, the race against time is quickly vanishing.
Will Cloette and Rocco discover their own powers in order to save the enchanted realm of Neverwood?
Can they rescue Prism, the most magical dark unicorn in existence?
Will they have any hope of ever returning home?
Will they ever taste sensational sandwiches ever again?
Interview with N. Jane Quackenbush
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
It
all started with my obsession with all things dark and lovely plus
my obsession with innocence and unicorns. I love having that
juxtaposition of dark and light in characters and Fantasy was the
perfect genre to develop this dichotomy.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
My
intention with this book is to present the world with a safe,
pleasant, and rewarding reading experience. With all the chaos that
we are bombarded with today, I wanted my readers to have a safe and
comforting place to land.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Writing
is the easy part. Self-Promotion is the hard part. I love everything
about the writing process. I especially love editing. Because I
write with little planning, it’s
always fun to look back and see where the creative spirits have led
me. All the minutia it takes to get the book to publication is when
my eyes cross and my head throbs.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
The
feeling of having a unicorn touch my head with its horn. A feeling
of tingling lightness came over me as I read and reread “The
Dark Unicorn”.
Were there alternate endings you considered?
The
ending was a complete surprise to me. I had no idea it would land so
tightly. I was very happy with the ending and couldn’t
think of a better way so I trusted my initial intuition.
Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?
Weirdly,
I went into a writer’s
cave for this project. I did most of my research online but I met so
many enthusiastic readers at the farmer’s
market where I go each week to sell my other books. They would offer
bits and pieces of what I might include and I sprinkled some of
those magical elements in where they’d
fit perfectly.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I
enjoy reading Historical Fiction, MG Fantasy, and anything Neil
Gaiman writes.
