Midpoint: A Memoir is an immigrant woman’s story of perseverance and building a legacy future generations can be proud of.

Patricia Angeles is at the midpoint of the average human lifespan. Decades of experience, mistakes, love, and loss have led her to contemplate what anyone might when they’ve lived half their life. “What kind of legacy am I leaving behind? What do I want my friends and family to remember after I’m gone? What are the biggest life lessons I can impart while I’m still here?”

Through this collection of personal stories, Patricia attempts to assess her answers to these questions, and perhaps encourage others to do the same. Spanning from her childhood in Manila to her immigration and life in Los Angeles, these stories touch on her youth, her acclimation to American culture, her remarkable career in the world of banking, her thoughts on motherhood, the important people who made her who she is today, and major events that forever changed the trajectory of her life.

A raw, honest, poignant, and at times funny read, Patricia aims to inspire her readers to pursue happiness against all odds and to not settle for a life of mediocrity. Through the power of story, this book ultimately asks: What are we but the accumulation of our experiences?

Interview with Patricia Angeles

What is your schedule like when you’re writing a book?

I don’t typically follow a rigid schedule but when I am finishing a project, I try to target a certain number of words per day on the days that I do write. I also have a full-time job so that takes priority, but whenever I get some down time, (aka. when the kids are asleep!) I make sure to get some words in.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

I’ve mulled over this a couple of times and I probably will, depending on the material I am working on.

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Always! However, I try not to stress about it too much. I’m an independent writer and the beauty in that is I get to set my own timeline. Conversely, when I feel motivated and inspired about a certain topic, I take advantage of those moments and try to carve out time dedicated solely to writing.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Very much so! A funny story -- nobody knew about my debit book Midpoint until the day before publication. My parents were shell-shocked and had no inkling at all. After the initial surprise waned, they happily and proudly spread the word to family and friends and then my mom placed a bulk order. Lol.

How many hours a day do you write?

It all depends on availability and inspiration. It could be a few minutes at a time, hourly spurts or very rare times, the majority of the day.

If you could invite any three people for dinner, whom would you invite?

    *Skipping*

Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?

I have an irrational fear of cats which started when I was a young girl. I unfortunately, cannot bear to be around feline friends. I do wish to someday overcome this!

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

It’s very important for me to keep my voice and thoughts as authentic as possible, but at the same time, when reviewing my work, I can’t help but place myself on the readers’ shoes. How will my work be received? Will they think this line is funny? Should I put a trigger warning for this passage? At the end of the day, it’s a balance between both.

How do you celebrate when you finish your book?

I’d probably be too tired to celebrate by then! Hahaha.

If you could be mentored by a famous author, who would it be?

It’s a toss-up between Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman! I absolutely love their work and wish I could pick their brilliant brains.
