Anna Grace is trapped in an abusive marriage with a man she does not love, forced to live on a Maryland plantation far from her Philadelphia home. An innocent cobalt blue medicine bottle becomes her way to freedom and love.
Beth flees an abusive relationship, making a fresh start on the coast of the Chesapeake. She discovers a love for sea glass, finding shards along the bay shorelines. With the discovery, she'll find a piece of a rare cobalt blue poison bottle that will lead her to unexpected love.
Both women will find their courage and the love they deserve, both tied to the simple cobalt blue bottle through time and tides.
A whisper from our soul lives on everything we touch, whether it is good or something more sinister. A tiny blue bottle changes the lives of all those who touch it, and its shards travel through time and tides to touch other lives and other loves through murder, adventure, love, and sea glass.
Interview with Sharon Brubaker
How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
I have written eight books thus far. Two are currently on the market, and six more are slated for publishing in the next year. I’m not sure I have a favorite. There are favorite pieces to each book, and they each speak to one or more of my passions.
If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?
I am currently working on the sequel to Tides of Blue. The forthcoming title is Currents of Blue, and it is set in 1918 and 1968. There are different shards of sea glass that come from the same cobalt blue poison bottle. There are a few surprises for the reader in this book that link to the first book.
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I “try” to write stand-alone books, but the characters keep talking to me, and they turn into a series. Yes, there are definite connections. My upcoming Green Man series slated to be published in 2023, is a romantic suspense series with connections between each book.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
Sea glassers are highly dependent on the tide table when hunting for glass. The title fits with my love of glassing and the cobalt blue bottle.
How long did it take you to write this book?
The idea for this book started at least four years ago. I was kicking around the idea of a story about sea glass when I volunteered at the North American Sea Glass Association (NASGA) now, International Sea Glass Association (ISGA). I love cobalt blue sea glass and talked to vendors about the origin of their pieces of cobalt blue glass items for sale.
What does the title mean?
Tides of Blue refers to the shards of sea glass from the cobalt blue bottle that come ashore on various beaches on the Chesapeake Bay.
What did you learn when writing the book?
I learned about life on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Baltimore in 1860 while writing this book. And I learned additional jewelry skills. I am a sea glass artisan and create sea glass and silver jewelry. Working on this book was a delight in studying and learning new techniques.
What surprised you the most?
I find writing to be an almost magical process. I love how the story(ies) flow and work together. I honestly thought Tides of Blue would be a stand-alone book, but more shards of glass want their stories told.
Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?
Yes, in my upcoming book series there is a beloved character that was killed. I received some hate mail about this when it was independently published!
What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?
I think a lot and dream a lot of particular characters. Sometimes, I need to try some of the things the characters are doing. My family and a couple of good friends are often sounding boards when I discuss characters.
