Cursed with the ability to see the shadow of death, Leia hides from the world and stays far away from people. Until the night she comes face to face with Brimstone Jandreau.

Brim is the president of the Death Riders MC, but he went nomad in an effort to heal from grief. The moment he spots Leia, he is drawn toward her. When she warns him of his impending death, he’s not sure if he believes her, but decides to take precautions.

He finds the would-be assassin. Then discovers it’s one of his own men.

Hit hard from the betrayal, he takes Leia with him back to his world. The more time they spend together, the deeper their bond grows. But death is waiting for Brim, and Leia will do anything to protect the man she’s fallen in love with.

Interview with Beth D. Carter

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

Hello! Thanks for having me here! Wow, how many books I’ve written…over a hundred or so. Probably more ranging from novel length to short stories. There a few I love, ones I’m like Meh about. My absolute favorite is a time travel book called Dreamland. I absolutely love the hero’s journey in that one. I’m also kinda partial to my new book, Shadow Touched. 😉

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

Yes, Shadow Touched is book 1 in the Death Riders MC series. The sequel is called Shadow Kissed and it straddles the timeline of the first book. These books have a slight paranormal element to them. While my heroine, Leia, already has her ability in the first book, in the second, my heroine Chase acquires hers in the beginning. It was a fun journey to take.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

I’m definitely building connections in this series. Almost all of my books have Easter Eggs, and this series is no different. In Shadow Touched, we visit with another couple from my book, Unbroken. At the end of the second book, we’re introduced to a mafia kingpin who was in my short anthology story, The Last DiLuca. Every character I create is usually with the thought that I’ll probably use them later in another story.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

I got the title from the ability my heroine has…seeing the Shadow of Death. When it appears on people, she can touch it and see how the person dies.

How long did it take you to write this book?

It took a couple of months. Book two took a little longer.

What does the title mean?

My heroine, Leia, can see the Shadow of Death. All the books will have the word “Shadow” in the title.

What did you learn when writing the book?

I’ve been published for fourteen years now and over time I’ve gotten better at writing, better at self-editing. Better at active voice rather than passive voice. I’ve learned how to trust my instincts and the characters when they talk to me.

What surprised you the most?

My characters will usually take me on a wild ride as I write their story, and this time was no different. I hadn’t planned on bringing back the hero and heroine from Unbroken, but one thing led to another and I was delighted to visit Kix and Piper again.

Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

I’ve certainly killed off a character that I loved! Lol. There was this old biker in my book, Warrior, that had to die to further the plot. I really liked him and I hope my readers liked him and was sad when he died.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I listen to music. That is my number one source of getting into the right headspace. All my stories have a signature song…that I draw inspiration from the beautiful lyrics. The song for Shadow Touched was All Eyes on You by Smash Into Pieces.

About the Author

I began reading my mom’s Harlequin Presents in the fifth grade, and from the first story I knew I wanted to write romance novels. Love is the most powerful emtion we can experience, and I adore happy ever afters. I write about the very ordinary woman thrust into an extraordinary circumstance, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. My characters are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.
