Excerpt:

Just then I heard a siren coming from outside the house. I don’t think I was ever so glad to hear anything in my life. “Hang on. Sounds like the medics are here.” I handed him the water bottle and ran to the front door as someone outside rang the bell repeatedly.

I threw the door open. “They’re in the dining room. A bunch of people got sick all at once, vomiting sick.”

The medics rushed past me, but someone grasped my arm before I could return to the dining room. I turned to see Jean Bancroft, dressed in a dark blue uniform with a patch on the sleeve, giving me a very concerned look. “What’s going on here?”

Jean was a medic who was also a part time cop, and I had a feeling it wasn’t an idle question. “This is Tera Bloomfield’s place. She had a dinner party. Nate Robicheaux and I cooked. We were cleaning up. Some of the people left, but the ones who stayed were having after-dinner drinks. All of a sudden they started throwing up. That’s all I know.”

Jean narrowed her eyes. “Was it food poisoning?”

Please God, no. “I don’t know. I don’t think so. We didn’t serve anything tricky. No eggs, no fish, no chicken. All the perishables were kept under refrigeration. The food was served at the right temperature.”

Jean nodded slowly. “Are there any leftovers?”

Some. Not much.” And Alex had washed the dishes. So had I.

Keep what there is. I’m pretty sure there’ll be questions.”

I nodded. All of a sudden I was pretty sure, too.

One of the medics rushed through the room and out the door. Moments later he returned, pushing a gurney.

Shit,” Jean murmured and followed him toward the dining room.

I stood staring after them, more ice dripping down my backbone. It looked like we were in big, big trouble.
