EXCERPT
Chasing the Trickster
She stared at the photo on the gallery wall and silently swore. All semester ghostly images had marred her work. And now not only a strange inclusion ruined her photo, but the pin light needed to be repositioned as well. She found a ladder in the hallway supply closet. Balancing precariously on the top step, she noticed that the imperfection had changed into the image of a vehicle, and it was on fire. She could see the superheated air wavering up off of the flames. The crackling and sudden heat of a blaze forced her to lift a hand to guard her face. It was going to explode. She was quite sure of it. And then she was falling backwards, falling down…
INTERVIEW
April Grey
The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Chasing the Trickster?
April Grey: I was going through a painful time in my life. My husband had had a heart attack, and I'd had to remove my son from public school because of his health issues. Part of me just really wanted to run away from my life. That was the part that took up living in the world of Chasing the Trickster.
The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
April Grey: In first grade I wrote a story which to my embarrassment was mimeographed to be sent home to my parents as part of a booklet of class writings. I tore it up because I didn't want my parents to know what a liar I was.
Although I loved books, I chose theatre as my first career.
One day over twenty-three years ago when I was in a library, I imagined my name on the spine of a book. My imagination was telling me that this was a new path I should take. I took classes and sold my first short story. Then I joined the Ph.D. program in theatre, got married and had a kid. It was a 12 year detour, but I eventually got back to writing.
So, when did I know I wanted to be a writer? I've always kept journals, so I've always been a writer, but writing for myself. Perhaps the question is when did I want to be a published writer? Maybe it was fifty years ago, when I smelt the chemicals coming off of that booklet in first grade, but was afraid of being revealed to my parents and the world as someone who made stuff up.
The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
April Grey: It was also first grade. I had some mild dyslexia and had to train myself to force the words to stay on the page. But once I deciphered the code, there was no stopping me. The library was my favorite place to be.
The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
April Grey: Speculative Fiction: Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction, Steampunk, Gothic, Thrillers, Mysteries. (It's easier to ask what I won't read).
The Avid Reader:What is your favorite book?
April Grey: At the moment, The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist. Next week it might be a different one. I'm fickle.
The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
April Grey: That's a tough question. Charles DeLint was a great inspiration to me, but could I say he's my favorite? For a certain period of my life he was. But if you had asked me when I was a teen I'd say either Philip K. Dick or Michael Moorcock. Depending on the genre and my age, I've had many favorite authors.
The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
April Grey: I'd like to travel through Europe when it was inhabited by the Celts. They had (as far as we can tell) little to no written language and so all our accounts of them are from the Romans and Greeks. There is also the folklore of various areas such as Ireland and Scotland to tell us a little of these people and their history.
The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
April Grey: Writing is very easy for me. I love writing. I put on my clown hat and I laugh and cry as I make stuff up.
Revisions are a whole other thing. I have to face up to maybe having had a bit too much of a good time and settle down to make some sense of what I've written. Sometimes I find myself overwhelmed with rough and first drafts and then I just have to grit my teeth and keep revising.
The Avid Reader:Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
April Grey: I've had many, many cats in my life and only the past eleven years have we had dogs. Right now we have Salem, an eleven year old black cat with one golden eye and one brown eye. Stella, our dear black and white longhaired Chihuahua, passed away last February. In April, we adopted Arwen (she looks like Liv Tyler from Lord of the Rings). She has short gray hair and is a deer type chi. The cat is 12 pounds and the dog is only 5 lbs. They spend all day romping and playing with each other.
The Avid Reader:What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
April Grey: Greek Salad. It's the perfect blend of salty/fatty with the olives and feta, and healthy with the veggies. There are a lot of foods that I've had to remove from my diet because I have celiac disease: foods with gluten would literally kill me. So I "live" for my salad. (Sweets are my downfall. I try not to think of them...)
The Avid Reader:Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
April Grey: Learn your craft: grammar, structure, characters, description. Don't be afraid to take classes, and know this: you will fail. Over and over again, and that's how you get to be good at writing. Give yourself permission to fail. Wear a silly hat and a clown nose. Lighten up and have fun.

Writing for e-zines 13 SPOTS LEFT
April Grey. The best piece of advice I ever had as a budding novelist was to also write short pieces. The benefits of publishing short stories and/or non-fiction articles with e-zines (and other publications) are huge. You can make a name for yourself as a writer, create a platform, improve your craft and get paid by selling to e-zines. This course will teach the beginning writer how to research markets, evaluate their own work, write a cover letter/follow up query and track their stories.
