Alice had her whole summer planned. Non-stop all-you-can-eat buffets while marathoning her favorite TV shows (best friends totally included) with the smallest dash of adulting–working at the library to pay her share of the rent. The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she’s asexual). Alice is done with dating–no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done.
But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!).
When her blissful summer takes an unexpected turn, and Takumi becomes her knight with a shiny library employee badge (close enough), Alice has to decide if she’s willing to risk their friendship for a love that might not be reciprocated—or understood.

Can
you tell us a little bit about the characters in Let’s Talk About Love?
Alice is a soon-to-be college
sophomore with a bubbly personality, witty spirit and tends to live on the
overdramatic side of life. Her best friend, Feenie, is sort of her total
opposite—razor-sharp and snarky with a penchant for fist fighting. Takumi,
Alice’s new coworker, likes to laugh but isn’t funny himself, loves extreme
sports, photography, and kids—he’s gearing up to start his first year of
teaching at an elementary school.
Can
you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the
future?
My next book with my publisher,
Swoon Reads, is in the works but there really
isn’t much to say about it yet. To keep myself busy, I also post free stories
on Wattpad (@ClaireKann). There you’ll find everything from an adorkable
vampire and the magical love of his life to rookie clairvoyants to college kids
with god complexes.
How
long would you say it takes you to write a book?
It definitely
depends on the book. For me, writing is rewriting. A first draft can take
anywhere from one week to several months. Then, I take that draft and rewrite the entire thing, expanding and editing
as I go. That process usually takes a month to over a year.
What
is your favorite childhood book?
I adored Goosebumps and the Fear
Street series as a kid.
If
you could spend the day with one of the characters from Let’s Talk About Love
who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you
would do.
I would spend the day with Alice
because she’s awesome and go to Disneyland. There, we would eat a bunch
of junk food, pick out lots of souvenirs for her friends, take a ton of pictures to show Takumi, and ride
very slow, non-scary rides.
What
was the hardest scene from Let’s Talk About Love to write?
The hardest scene is a bit of a spoiler, so I can’t talk about it, but
it involves Alice and her dad towards the end of the book. I cried and cried
and cried as I wrote it.
What
made you want to become a writer?
I took a creating writing class as
an elective in college. Our first assignment was to write a short story to be
critiqued by our classmates during workshop.
My story, Daddy’s Little Monster, was
about a girl who gets a second chance at existing when she’s hired to make
bargains with the parents of dying children—ten more years of life in exchange for the kid’s soul—and my classmates loved it. I changed my major to English the next day.

right now I’m listening to “Off the Wall” by Michael Jackson. We’ll go with
that.

Claire Kann hails from the glorious Bay Area where the weather is regrettably not nearly as temperate as it used to be. She has a BA in English/Creative Writing from Sonoma State University, works for a nonprofit that you may have heard of where she daydreams like she’s paid to do it.
