‘Fireflies at 3 am’ brings a landmark new genre to the world of literature. It’s a book with the flow of poetry but the ebb of short stories – rightfully called “Shoetry”.
This creation takes you to the roots of humanity - stripping back the veneers of life, society and interaction to see people and their ways in an entirely new light.
Interview with Danni Thomas
What was the hardest scene from your book to write?
The book is all about 70 Shoetry and 12 short stories. A Shoetry is where you combine the flow of poetry and ebb of short stories. The difficult part happened after I wrote th first 30 Shoetry. Post that, I had to dig deep into my personal experiences and talk to people about their experiences. The first 30 must have taken around 2 months to write. The next 40 took me around 7 months to compile!
Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
I am a Creative Director/Copywriter in an advertising agency. In the last 15+ years, I’ve had to tell the story of a product in as few words as possible. That’s where I honed my skills in crafting and communicating using bare minimum words. Also, I love poetry. I just thought, “Why not combine my experience of writing and love of poetry?”
If you write in more than one genre, how do you balance them?
This is my first book. I have just experimented with a relatively new genre called Shoetry. I’ll be able to answer your question better once I explore other genres.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
It was a very liberating experience. The book is mainly about my experiences. As I started writing them down, it brought to the surface some pent-up emotions. Once I got them on paper, I just felt lighter.
What book that you have read has most influenced your life?
You’ll be surprised. It’s Godfather. A lot of what Godfather said has stayed with me till date.
Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
The book tilts a little towards the darker side. Those who know me, expected the book to be a humorous one. I always see the lighter side of life and am quick with my, supposedly funny, one liners. Sometimes, I just I pity my friends who have to endure them.
Can you tell us something about your book that is not in the summary?
The pandemic made this book possible. The first few months I binged on movies. Then I got bored. One day I saw my daughter pursue her hobby with passion. She was painting something and it took her days to finish it. I have written for my clients innumerable times. This particular incident pushed me to write for myself.
About the Author
Over the last 18 years, he worked at some of the biggest advertising agencies in the world, made some memorable ads, won international recognition for his work, and learned how to manage acid reflux. Life was OK, but he decided to complicate it by writing a book.
People nowadays avoid him like the plague lest he ask them to review his work. His children have started studying harder and his wife has taken up baking so that they can escape his nagging requests, every now and then, to read what he’s written. But all said and done, none of that has dampened his spirits. Currently, he is looking forward to selling over a million copies and is busy convincing each of his friends to buy more than 3 copies of the book. Sucker.
