Val

(The Hawks #2)
Publication date: April 22nd 2021
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance
He’ll do anything to save her. And then he’ll say goodbye…
Being framed for murder, captured, and tortured for weeks didn’t break Val. But seeing Alanna every day, knowing she didn’t love him as he loved her, surely would. So, he’ll do whatever is necessary to stop the king from executing her…then he’ll walk away. Forever.
Queen Alanna gave up everything—including her soul mate— to secure the treaty that would end the war. Now, her husband wants her dead and any chance she had for true happiness with Val is ruined.
The king’s new guards are arrayed against them, the threat of war looms large, and their enemy has the upper hand. When all is said and done, will Alanna choose to sacrifice her own happiness to save her kingdom? Or will she risk it all for a second chance at happily ever after with Val?
Val, book 2 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.
Interview with Jennie Lynn Roberts
What made you want to become a writer?
Similar to most writers, I think, I’ve always written – little poems, short stories, ideas in notebooks and long journals. Over the last few years, I’ve really loved escaping into fantasy romance, it has all the magic and excitement that I look for, as well as the guaranteed HEA that I love, and I wanted to create those kinds of worlds myself.
What inspired you to write Val?
Val is book 2 of the series and comes directly after Tristan (book 1). I really wanted to continue living in the world of the Hawks, but I also particularly wanted to give Val and Alanna their story – we already know from book 1 that they had suffered, and I wanted them to finally get the love that they deserved.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Val?
Val is a Mabin—he has huge silver-gray wings—who was allocated to Princess Alanna as her personal guard when she married Prince Ballanor. Val falls for Alanna, but she stays with Ballanor to uphold the treaty between their kingdoms.
At the beginning of the book, Val is struggling with his experiences, first as a guard, and then as a prisoner, as well as dealing with his belief that Alanna doesn’t love him. He feels very isolated and angry, but he’s deeply honorable and committed to his vow to keep Alanna safe. He wants to walk away, but he can’t make himself leave her.
Alanna is a Verturian princess, sent to the Kingdom of Brythoria to make a political marriage as part of the treaty. She suffered being married to Ballanor, but she stayed and did everything she could to maintain the treaty that would save thousands of people. Alanna has always been a pawn, maneuvered by other people; she has to learn to be brave, to stand up for herself, and to fight for the people she loves.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
I honestly don’t only have one favorite author, but if I was forced to take only one author’s books onto a dessert island, I would take Kristen Callihan’s.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Mathos (book 3 of the Hawks) is in its final stages, so I hope to have that out soon. It’s also a fantasy adventure romance, but it’s quite a bit lighter than Val. It’s an enemies-to-lovers romance, and I love both Mathos’s snarky inner beast and Lucilla’s strength and determination.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I love these characters. They have fears and weaknesses, but they learn and grow. Alanna has to be brave if she’s going to win Val back, and she slowly learns that she already has that strength inside her. Val feels disconnected and angry, but he realizes that he has a lot to be grateful for and that he isn’t alone.
This book is about finding hope, love, and friendship after adversity, and I think that is something that we can all relate to, it’s certainly something that is very important to me.
Author Bio:
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every strong, kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to support her at every turn, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since.
Jennie would rather be writing than doing anything else—except for spending time with her gorgeous family, of course. But when she isn’t building vibrant new worlds, she can be found nattering with friends, baking up a storm, or strolling in the woods around her home in England.
If you want to talk books, romance, movies, reluctant heroes, or just about anything else with Jennie, feel free to contact her atwww.jennielynnroberts.com. But be prepared to settle in for a long chat if you bring up shifters, vampires, Star Wars, or The Princess Bride….
