What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

My story idea typically starts as a dilemma or an unresolved conflict. For example, what would happen if a reporter interested in telling stories was asked for a favor. What would make her say no? I keep working with the idea until it becomes a fuller story concept. And then I begin to figure out the characters to put into the situation and think about their backstories, what motivates them. After spending time thinking about their emotional life, I sketch out their fears, what they hide about themselves and what they want from life.

Once the characters are fully fleshed out, I write a few test scenes to figure out how they interact. My next step is to use their backstory and the overall story idea to outline the novel. My first draft is mostly dialog but then I go back and add in physical descriptions, internal thoughts and reactions. By this point, I know the characters well and place them in situations that will help them grow towards having a significant and meaningful relationship and being fully present in their own life.
