Excerpt Tour + #Giveaway: Jane Austen Lied to Me by Jeanette Watts @JAMLW_writer @GoddessFish

by Jeanette Watts

GENRE: Romantic Comedy

Dear Diary,

In three years of college, there are seven times my life seemed to suddenly turn into a Jane Austen novel; seven times my life, instead of becoming a romance, turned into a made-for-TV drama.

What am I doing wrong?

Aug 27

I am so glad Eddie came to get me! It was easy throwing everything into the back of his dad’s pickup truck, strapping it all down, kissing everyone goodbye, and taking off.

I had so much to tell him! I told him about my disastrous career as a freshman. My plans to be a philosophy major. My summer at McDonald’s. My Jane-Austen-style relationships with Darcy and Professor Jacobson.

You and your Jane Austen,” he shook his head at me.

What’s wrong with Jane Austen?” I demanded to know.

Those are stories, Beth.” Of course a guy who had known me since 6th grade couldn’t adapt to my new name. “This is real life. Life isn’t a romance novel.”

It can be,” I insisted. “In fact, my life was very much like a romance in both cases. Very much like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, even. It’s just that it didn’t come out that way in the end.”

So you’re saying the stories were right, but the endings came out wrong?”

I thought about it. “Yeah, I guess something like that.”

I think your precious Jane Austen is giving you unrealistic expectations.” He gave me an earnest look. “Now you’ve got me worrying about you, Beth.”

I couldn’t decide whether I should be insulted or flattered by his concern. “You think I don’t know how to distinguish fact from fiction?”

That’s kind of overstating the matter, and you know it,” he said calmly. “But, it’s a good question. You can tell fact from fiction, right?”

Of course I can. But if you look at this more philosophically, all characters are an extension of the author. So instead of talking about facts, let’s talk about truths. Jane Austen’s characters were never real, but there’s a truth to what she writes about.”
