Excerpt:
"Play it again," I said and James did. I listened. "They have vocal cords similar to ours, but I'll bet we're missing some of the pitches. We'll probably sound flat when we speak their language. Have they sent anything in any of our languages?"
"No."
"Any video?" Ron asked.
"No."
"Maybe they're waiting to see if there's intelligent life on our planet?" I said.
"Not likely," said James, putting his laptop away. "The transmission came in on our own satellite frequency bands. It was precise. They can pick up our own signals."
"Then they know more about us than we do about them," Ron observed.
James nodded. "If they're hostile, it makes no sense to announce their knowledge."
"Unless they're trying to get inside our defenses," Ron replied.
"You're supposed to make me less paranoid, not more," James said sourly.
Interview with T. L. Ford
Do you have any tattoos? Where? When did you get it/them? Where are they on your body?
I get henna every year at our local Artsfest. I change my mind too often to settle on something permanent. I once had the pleasure of walking around a Baltimore tattoo convention with 5 great rooms filled with tattoo artists. The artwork was unbelievable. If there had been a soul there doing henna, I'd've come out covered head-to-toe.
Is your life anything like it was two years ago?
Yes, and no. Yes, I'm still driven to complete projects (stories, art, programming). And no, I was starting to learn roller derby and got side-tracked with social distancing. I miss my roller skates.
How long have you been writing?
I published stories in middle school, in the school publication (so not super-impressive), and wrote many stories through high school (again, published in the school publication, slightly more impressive). In college, I published one of my homework assignments in the Linux Gazette at the teacher's suggestion. I have a lot of unfinished stories. I published my first book when Amazon announced I could easily self-publish (and didn't have to do the whole agent-search/letter thing). The other seven books have launched in scattered years since.
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?
Dream it and do it. Each project you work on will be better than the last in some way. It's a growth and learning experience. Each one is just a picture of your skill and thinking at the time.
Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.
I want a beruffe - that's an alien pet that is a cross between a roly-poly and a kitten. It's a very fluffy, round creature that is soft and squishy with a cat-like purr. My main character gets one. Am I allowed to be jealous of my main character?

Thank you, Sherry! I apparently really like those colors. I purchased a new pair of walking shoes and a week later, when the first print arrived, I discovered they match my book cover.
