Contemporary Romance
Date Published: May 1, 2017
Every paramedic’s worst nightmare is to arrive at the scene of a horrific accident and find out that the victim is someone they love. Or, in Caden Ross’s case, the woman he used to love. It took two years to finally get over Dakota and move on with his life, or so Caden believed, until he has to face the thought of a world without her. Nothing could have prepared the handsome, headstrong off-duty paramedic for the emotional upheaval of keeping the woman he once thought would be his forever alive.
Dakota Martineau appeared to have the world in the palm of her hand. She is beautiful, kind, has an adoring family, including her best friend and identical twin sister. She has a passion for incorporating her love of life, family, and her cultural background into her dream job with special needs kids. Then, in a life-altering crash, she discovers just how fragile life is. Thankful to be surrounded by an incredible group of friends who will help heal, not just her body, but also her soul, she knows she should be happy she is alive and on the mend, but Dakota is still tormented by the loss of her one true love.
How can you feel safe with the one person who hurt you the most? What road will Caden and Dakota take when they discover fate wreaked havoc on everything they thought was true?
Excerpt from Thicker
Than Blood
“Opening
the door, he enquired, “What are you doing here, and where is your sidekick?”
“Brody
is waiting downstairs. Are you going to ask me in, mate? We need to talk.”
“I
wasn’t talking about Brody. I was talking about Koko.”
“If
you’re trying to cause a kerfuffle, it won’t work.”
“Don’t
have a clue what the hell you just said, but if you say we need to talk and
without Brody or Koko, I’m thinking I’m going to need a beer.”
Edward
followed him in. “It means a skirmish or a fight. And you might want something
a little stronger. I bloody well do.”
If
Caden had been more like his old self, that comment might have raised his
hackles. Instead, he numbly grabbed his bottle of Jack and two tumblers before
heading to his couch. He poured a generous amount in each glass then handed one
to Edward.
“What
do I owe for the pleasure of your company? What’s in the envelope?”
“All
in due time, Caden. I hope you worked today and don’t have a shift later,
because that is a generous amount of liquor you poured.”
“I’m
off for the next four days, thanks for asking, Mother.”
“A
little testy today?”
“Edward,
get to the damn point. I’m not really up for a boys’ night.”
Edward
made a show of looking around the room. “Where’s your girlfriend?”
Caden
took another large sip and let the alcohol burn its way down to his stomach
before he wheezed out, “Moved out a while ago.”
“Sorry,
I didn’t know. What happened?”
Caden
stood, beyond annoyed with all the questions. “If you must know and if it will
get you out of my home sooner, she left me after she found out that I’m still
in love with Dakota. Happy now?”
Edward’s
face broke into a huge smile. “Actually, you couldn’t have said anything else
that would make me happier.”
Leaning
down and getting into Edward’s face, he replied, “You’re seriously starting to
piss me off. Do you have a death wish or something? You do remember your
bodyguard is downstairs, right? Say what you have to say and get out.”
Not
intimidated one bit, Edward calmly responded, “Do I really have to mop your
floors with your arse before I prove to you that I can and will take care of
myself? Besides, after I tell you why I came here, I think you’re going to want
to kiss my arse and not kick it. Now sit the fuck down and hear me out.”
Taken
aback by the conviction in Edward’s voice, Caden obediently sat, taking another
huge gulp of his drink. “Start talking.”
“I
need some assurances from you first. What I am about to show you is going to
mess with your mind, and I want you to be prepared. You have to keep your
temper in check and think things through before you go off half-cocked. This
involves a lot of people who I care about. They are going to be hurt enough
without you adding fuel to the fire. That being said, do I have your word that
you will stay calm and think about everyone involved?”
“How
can I honestly give you my word if I don’t know what it’s about or how I’ll
react?”
