Hope Allison McKinley died. Or, at least everyone thought she did. When she suddenly wakes up in the middle of her own funeral - to the shock of all her loved ones - that is just the beginning of her problems.

Reawakened, Hope now sees what everyone really thought of her. The casket is cheap, the flowers suck, and she’s wearing an outfit she wouldn’t be caught dead in! It’s her worst nightmare come true and all hell is about to break loose.

In Woke Up Dead, Hope is faced with the enormous task of putting her death behind her and rebuilding her life. Having to overcome being a YouTube sensation and being shunned by her family, she slowly comes to realize that this is going to be a long, difficult, frustrating road.

If you ever wondered what would happen if you Woke Up Dead, let Hope Allison McKinley walk you through the trials and tribulations in a story that will have you dying to read more.

Interview with Nadia Gilkes

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
The Jaguar

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
I write sporadically. When I participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) I write for a couple hours per day. Outside of NaNoWriMo I will write 3-5 hours per week unless I am actively working on a novel/book, in which case I will allot a couple hours per day.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
I do read the book reviews. Thankfully, they have all been good so far. Many have given great ideas on things they would like to see in the sequel and should I do one, I will keep that in consideration.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
I don’t have hidden messages but some scenarios will be familiar to a select few, and many names in my first novel Woke Up Dead do have significance.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Woke Up Dead?
In Woke Up Dead there is really one main character that drives the story - Hope McKinley. I chose the name Hope because there is a lot of my personality wrapped in the main character and my name (Nadia) means hope. You see additional supporting characters but this is truly Hope’s story and how she rebounds from tragedy.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Many have asked for a sequel to Woke Up Dead and I will certainly consider it. I am working on a Will writing guide to assist people in drafting their wills. This guide will be real-life examples of things that went wrong, and how you can better craft your documents to minimize confusion for your family during the probate process.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
As long as the words come.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
No.

What inspires you to write?
People. If you are observant, there are a myriad of hysterical things happening all around us. Sometimes I will take note of a scenario and let my imagination run wild with it.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
I love both

Read series or stand-alone?
A Stephen King series. For everyone else, standalone.

Read Science fiction or horror?
Horror

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz?
That is tough because I read and love both. I’ve been reading Stephen King since I was a little girl. So if I have to choose I would say SK. I started reading DK because Stephen once said, “If I want to be scared, I read Dean Koontz.” I ran right over and started reading and alternate both their books pretty regularly.

Read the book or watch the movie?
Read the book first.

Read an ebook or paperback?
eBook

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
Computer, WiFi, and please let me have a sewing machine.

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
Would love to do a cross country book store tour.

About the Author

I hate the idea of being kept in a box. I have always had a creative flair and delight in quilting, writing, and occasionally dusting off my flute. Over the past decade, I've served my clients and community as a family law attorney. I genuinely love serving, but being devoted to others can often leave one feeling drained and unfulfilled.

In 2019, a mind shift happened. I decided to unchain myself from my desk and nurture my need to create. I stopped living the life others expected of me and started chasing my dreams. In September of 2019, my first book, Woke Up Dead, will be available for purchase. It is an amusing, tongue-in-cheek novella about a young woman who wakes up at her own funeral, to the shock of those in attendance, and soon finds that getting back to life as normal is nearly impossible.

In my spare time, you can find me traveling, creating, attending concerts, and drinking my sorrows away after the latest Buffalo Bills loss. I also attend as many P!nk experiences as I possibly can. (She does not do concerts ... she creates bucket list experiences ...).
