Interview with Shami Stovall
Hello, everyone! My name is Shami and I’m here to talk about
my latest release, A
Company of Monsters! It’s a historical paranormal fantasy with sorcerers in
WWI!
Without further ado, here is the interview!
As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit
animal?
I would choose the kirin (also
known as the Chinese unicorn). They only show themselves to great leaders (or
those with a significant destiny) and they’re a mix of a dragon and a horse!
How is that not the most amazing mascot of all time? I love it!
How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
Eight. It’s my full-time job,
and I’m editing, writing, outlining, advertising, answer blog interviews, or
reading every single day.
Do you read your book reviews?
Yes. All the good reviews get me excited for life. The
moment I see a 5 star, I can’t wait to writ the next in the series. If I get a
negative review, I tend to get depressed, but I don’t let it get me down.
Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few
people will find?
Yes. There are lots of references to my Dungeons &
Dragons games, or to video games, or to close friends all throughout my
writing. I’ve even started incorporating my Facebook fan group into my books,
so there’s that!
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in A Company of Monsters?
The main character is named Geist (which is German for Ghost) because her sorcery allows her to
become invisible and go through objects. She’s the leader of a special forces
team (a woman pretending to be a man because of the time period). Her love
interest is a man with death sorcery—a defector from Germany. It gets pretty
intense!
Can you tell us a
little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I write a lot of fantasy and science fiction, and the next
book to be released is my Coliseum
Arcanist—a book about people who bond with mythological creatures. It’s a
fun adventure novel with magic, danger, and creepy enemies!
Do you allow yourself
a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
I write every day, but I don’t force it. If I need to take a
break, I do.
Do you have a certain
number of words or pages you write per day?
I strive to write 3k words a day.
What inspires you to
write?
All the stories trapped in my
head!
Would you rather:
Read fiction or
non-fiction?
Fiction. Always.
Read series or
stand-alone?
Series. Always.
Read Science fiction
or horror?
Science fiction.
Read Stephen King or
Dean Koontz?
Stephen King.
Read the book or
watch the movie?
Read the book.
Read an ebook or
paperback?
Ebook—but this is a close call.

About the Author
Shami Stovall grew up in California’s central valley with a single mother and little brother. Despite no one in her family earning a degree higher than a GED, she put herself through college (earning a BA in History), and then continued on to law school where she obtained her Juris Doctorate.
As a child, Stovall’s favorite novel was Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. The adventure on a deserted island opened her mind to ideas and realities she had never given thought before—and it was at that moment Stovall realized story telling (specifically fiction) became her passion. Anything that told a story, be it a movie, book, video game or comic, she had to experience. Now, as a professor and author, Stovall wants to add her voice to the myriad of stories in the world and she hopes you enjoy.
