Interview with Jennifer Daly
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
Over the last couple of years, I saw that as a country we were arguing about everything from the color of our skin to masks. I wanted to make a positive difference and impact so I started with my home, helping my children to accept others that are different than themselves and decided it would be fun to introduce the concept by way of a children’s book.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
My goal is to introduce kids to the concept that having diversity in our friend groups makes great teams. I feel I achieve that every time I get to read my book to a new group of kids.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
It honestly came so quickly. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get it in more hands so it can have a wider reach.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I loved that I was able to incorporate my girls’ names and character traits in the book.
Where there alternate endings you considered?
I did consider making the book longer and have the two new friends encounter another challenge together but decided to save that as a sequel for the book!
Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?
One story is about a new friend that really helped inspire the thought process behind this book. Shortly before writing the book, I met a lady named Naomi. She was from Ethiopia and from first glance, we had nothing in common. If I had chosen not to let her in my life, I would have missed out on the pure joy and deep belly laughter she brings to our friendship.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I am one of those geeks who LOVE self-help, non-fiction books. Anything to help me improve and help others is a win!
