Volume Three: The World is Our Exile
The
world had melted away to nothing, and the stop outside the back courtyard of
her house jarred my bones, like being dropped from la fee verte’s wings.
Elyse
pulled away from me, already on the ground and opening the gate before the
wheels even stopped turning. I blinked hard, paid the driver and followed her
inside, slow, deliberate, the fangs in my mouth aching. She reached the top of
the stairs, searching for a key in her reticule, the house dark and empty and
looming above. I wanted to make the screams of her pleasure echo throughout its
cavernous halls.
I
met her at the door as she put the skeleton key in the lock. The gears clicked.
I opened the door and she hurried inside and went into the kitchen with me
close behind.
“Sorbet’s
in the ice box.” She disappeared around a dark corner and ascended a servants’
stairwell. “I’ll be right down,” she called.
I
refused to wait. I set down the pikestaff, took off my boots and placed them at
the bottom of the dark stairs. Thunder rumbled, and I began the pursuit.
Lightning
flashed through a stained rose window and bathed the corridor in an eerie,
colorful prism. My feet fell silent on the steps and I could feel her
excitement and anxiety through the air, lingering like the smoke of a distant
fire. The old wood lathe smelled like baking sawdust in the stuffy, narrow
corridor, mixing with the ghost of her perfume. I reached the third floor and
opened the door, silent as the rain now falling. Wind blew through the curtains
covering the balcony and billowed through the open French doors. I crept into
her room.
She
stood in front of a vanity, her clothes in a pool at her feet. She spun around
at my entry, her eyes wide and flashing like the lightning outside. Her arms
were crossed over her breasts. She wore nothing but patterned, silk stockings
that stopped just above the knee. Her lips parted and breath came quick. I
could almost smell the blood pounding through her.
I
shut the door, bringing the hunt to a close. I needed her. I needed her then or
I was going to disintegrate into dust.
Thunder
rumbled and the rain began a percussive deluge against the roof tiles as I
crossed the room, rolling in taciturn as the valley fog, holding her gaze in
mine. The heat from her body and quickened breath formed a palpable aura around
her, piquant and dizzying. She pressed into the edge of the vanity as I towered
over her. The mirror rattled, bottles of rouge clattered to the floor, and
lightning cracked as I wrapped my hand around her neck, her hair in my fingers.
I held her tight, and pulled her arms away.
“You’re
so pretty. I just want to look at you,” I said.
