Excerpt Tour + #Giveaway: In Between Days by Anne Jamison @prof_anne @GoddessFish

In Between Days
by Anne Jamison
GENRE: Young Adult

BLURB:

Chicago suburbs, 1985. The high school. The mall. The blood-stained Mercedes. Misogyny. Homophobia. Class warfare. Cocaine.

(And the first semester isn’t even over yet.)

The Jocks with their pastel Izods. The Barbies. The loser Burnouts.

High school in the 1980s had rules. Barbies and Jocks can mix. Barbie cheerleaders steer clear of the losers. Punks want to burn it all down.

Samantha Ward doesn't love the rules, but she plays to win. So when a snarky Burnout goes after her in a face-off, of course she fights back. Of course she fights mean. She may not get his sex joke, but she knows he made one. About her. In front of the entire cafeteria. And what's worse, she feels a tingle when she looks at bad-boy Jason.

How could she know her mean girl put-down would launch a war? Or that the school she knows hides a darker world she never even dreamed of?

In Between Days is a pitch-perfect story of first love, friendship, and enemies; of loyalty, betrayal, and the power of secrets. This darkly funny, suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of The Outsiders and The Breakfast Club.

"GRIPPING AND UNPUTDOWNABLE." --Christina Lauren, international bestselling authors of Dating You/Hating You “THIS WAS a bittersweet tumble into eighties high school nostalgia, with all the angst, sexual tension and emotional confusion involved with first love, and so well done it was a non-stop read to the end.… (Oh, and one of the best first kisses I have EVER read...),” says one reviewer

Author's Note:

This is a historical novel that contains period language that is, and was then, and should be, offensive.

Excerpt:

Further on toward the school, Skinny and Bogart and Dylan Dougherty were slouching around with a couple of girls, so Jason headed that way. As he’d hoped, Jason recognized one of the girls as Shelly—C-cup, rum and Cokes, last name unclear at this point. Wiseass girl usually up for some fun.

“Check it out, it’s the Devil himself . . . in the flesh.” Shelly did check him out, slowly, as if she knew a thing or two about the flesh of Jason Devlin. Jason nodded to her, a little private. She did know a thing or two. He could stand her getting to know a couple more, maybe later that day.

“Man, he is the Devil.” Skinny gestured toward the graveyard. “You communing with your minions and shit?”

“Nah.” Jason looked at Skinny. “That’s what I’m doing right now.” Everyone else laughed.

“Fuck you, man,” Skinny said, but without any real bite to it.

“Chill, dude. You know how much,” Jason paused and grasped Skinny’s hand, “I really, really love you.”  Skinny was an ugly dude with skin that always looked like it needed washing, a kind of sour smell, and a really nasty sense of humor. No one, Jason thought, probably loved Skinny Nowlin. But he was loyal as hell and usually good for a laugh.

“Nah, you’re just into me for the sex, fag, but I told you, it’s over.” Skinny shoved him.

“Whoa. Cool it. Watch the visual, man, I’ll be soft for days now.”

“Dudes, I’ll lose my lunch!” Bogart looked up sleepily from where he was fiddling with some rolling papers and a film canister for no apparent reason. Bogart rarely had an apparent reason for anything he did. Skinny shoved him, too. He fell.

A voice Jason didn’t recognize cut through the laughter. “So what were you doing over with the dead people, devil man?” The girl who spoke tilted her head to one side and smiled slowly around her words, making “devil man” sound both mocking and like some secret shared joke.

Jason shrugged. He grabbed on to Shelly’s ponytail and gave it a yank so she didn’t think he was going for that other chick. Not like he and Shel were a thing, because Jason didn’t get into things with girls, but Shelly knew his deal and seemed cool with it, and after a morning like this one, a little human touch would definitely be in order.

But he was interested in this other girl in a different way. Like she might be interesting. She had blue spiky hair and a lot of eyeliner, and he was pretty sure he hadn’t seen her around because that would be memorable in a cookie-cutter school like Highland. Thing was, she looked familiar, too.
