With the Hope Diamond locked around her throat, Jesse Alexander finds herself in the unfortunate position of being a walking national treasure. With the Starfall stone poised to pulse and flood the world with more of its magic, she must figure out how to remove it before she becomes its pawn yet again.

Unfortunately, the stone has a mind—and plans—of its own. Add in a determined tiger, a wolf out for revenge, and an ultimatum to find her clan's missing Starfall stone, and it will take all of Jesse's wit and cunning to survive with her life—and her heart—intact.

Interview with RJ Blain

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
This depends on day of the week, but right now, I’m a sloth. I like horses, unicorns, dragons, and cats of all spots or stripes. But right now, I’m a sloth. A very tired sloth.

(It has been a very busy month.)

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
Too many. One of my goals in 2020 is to make a healthier schedule so I work fewer hours a day. I want a happier general life, one that doesn’t involve me working quite as much.

I’m a little tired of 15+ hour days right now.

Do you read your book reviews?
I try not to, but when I do, I generally tend to hate myself and suffer from depression. I really try not to. I hate disappointing myself, and the negative people tend to become very vocal. So, I try to hide from them.

If I DO read my reviews, I try to read only the 5* ones to dodge the negativity. I’m negative enough to myself, so I don’t need other people being negative, too.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Sometimes. But I’m not telling when, where, or why. That would ruin it for the few people who find them!

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Steel Heart?
Two tigers meet in a bar. Chaos ensues. Grizzly bears, a rabbit, a horse, and a panther are dragged into the chaos. More chaos ensues. There are some semi-sentient rocks that create even more chaos.

Poor Jesse, having to put up with all that.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Right now, I’m working on Blood Bound, which is a book about my take on vampires. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve also been working on some edgier urban fantasy novels, including Booked for Murder, which features a spunky heroine and a very fluffy cat.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
I do what’s needed to make the words happen. If the words are happening, I’ll write as long as they’re coming. If they’re not coming, well, they need to, so I work however long it takes me to get the required amount of words done for the day.

But, this is my day job, so… I do what I must!

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
2,000 is generally my minimum to feel happy about my work day. Lately, it’s varied from 3,500-7,000 a day because of deadlines.

What inspires you to write?
Life. There’s a story everywhere if you bother to look for it—and half of my stories come from looking for those stories and then asking myself, “But what if…?”

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
I refuse to choose! I read both equally.

Read series or stand-alone?
I still refuse to choose! I read both equally.

Read Science fiction or horror?
Science Fiction.

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz
Stephen King. The Stand. On Repeat into Infinity and beyond.

Read the book or watch the movie?
Book. I don’t watch tv.

Read an ebook or paperback?
E-books. Paperbacks give me migraines, and words are words.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
I’ll take the computer and wi-fi, as I need both to write efficiently. (However enjoyable libraries and handwriting books are!)

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
Blog tour online; I’m an introvert, and while I would love the cross-country element with my spouse, I’d die from having to pretend I’m an extrovert.

Thanks for having me!!
