Interview with Tammy L. Hein
What was the hardest scene from your book to write?
For me, I would have to say it was Chapter 5. The part where I discuss using the environment to motivate your dog. I went into this chapter understanding how to do this, but I struggled with explaining how to do it. I am better at showing how it’s done. So trying to put it on paper in a way that helps readers to understand what I mean, it was difficult. I think I managed, though. Hopefully.
Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
I meant this book to go alongside my dog training business. My business took a hit when Covid arrived. I felt I needed to help people in fresh ways. I have always enjoyed writing. I rarely write non-fiction. My past writing projects are fantasy.
I read lots of dog training books and decided this might be something new for my business to try. I am glad I did. I have several works in progress on the go now. In non-fiction and fantasy. I don’t know if I will publish my fantasy projects, but it got me back into writing. I have written nothing in over 5 years before Covid. I never knew how much I missed it until I took it up again.
If you write in more than one genre, how do you balance them?
Balance? What is that?
I focus on what I'm feeling into in the moment. I am a mom and a business owner, so I set a chunk of time aside daily where I sit to write. Sometimes I write non-fiction and other times I write fantasy. I will work on whichever project is calling me. I rarely have large chunks of time to work. My writing time varies from 5 minutes to 3 hours. With quick notes in my cell phone in between.
This means that I have multiple projects on the go and I write scenes out of order. Somehow they come together in the end.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
The learning curve. This book taught me everything about the book publishing process. I was so naïve when I started. Now I feel prepared for future writing projects. I enjoyed the writing process and networking. Authors helping authors makes writing feel like a community. Teaching each other the ropes as we go. Some are best-selling authors and others are like me, just getting started.
I have 2 books about dog training that influence me the most as a dog trainer.
“If A Dog’s Prayers Were Answered... Bones Would Rain From The Sky,” by Suzanne Clothier.
“Culture Clash,” by Jean Donaldson.
Both books were enjoyable to read. They focus on building deeper relationships with dogs. Increasing the bond between handler and dog is what I strive for in my business. These two books help push me in that direction in my work.
Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
Growing up, I wanted to be a writer. When I was 13, I wrote stories and sent them to publishers. They rejected me simply because of my age, but they encouraged me to keep writing. I got a poem published in a poem book. One of those programs where you pay money and they publish for you. It took me 4 payments to cover the cost. I never saw the book they published it in, but I received a plaque with the poem on it. My dad has it hanging on his wall. If I had known then what I know now, I wouldn’t have gone that route. Live and learn.
The struggles I endured back then caused me to change paths. I decided I wanted to be a pilot. That swiftly changed to Vet. In the end, I landed on the dog training path.
Now it seems my life has gone full circle. Back to writing, but now I am writing about dog training and fantasy stories.
Can you tell us something about your book that is not in the summary?
Within the book, I tell stories from my own experiences. Some of them aren’t even dog-related. These stories are used to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the concepts I am trying to teach.
