He could be my savior…or my downfall…
I was living a lie.
No one knew who I really was. Letting someone in could’ve been devastating for my family.
For the most part, isolation wasn’t a hardship. It’s not like I was looking for love or any kind of serious relationship.
But then I met Logan.
I tried to keep my distance. He wouldn’t let me.
Logan is gentle, kind, and loving. Everything I never knew I needed in my life.
He’s also a cop—exactly the kind of man who’d never understand my truth.
So, while he shared his deepest, darkest secrets, I kept mine hidden.
Too bad I couldn’t keep my heart locked away, too.
Because now, I’m falling for a man who can never be mine. Not truly, anyway.
How can I ask him to be my future when I can’t even let him help me survive my present?
First Light, book three in the Haven Island series, is a lightly angsty, sometimes suspenseful, small town, military contemporary romance featuring a grumpy protective, over hero and the heroine who steals his heart. All of the books in the series are standalone contemporary romance novels and can be read in any order.

Interview with Isabel Jolie
What made you want to become a writer?
I’m not exactly sure. I remember in grade school having an awareness that my writing assignments were my favorite. But, as is the case with many writers, I found many different vocations appealing. My undergraduate degree is in Journalism. But I concentrated on advertising, and went into advertising, because it seemed so much more practical and realistic. I enjoy writing. That’s the easy answer to the question. But, I think the bigger question is what made me actually sit down and do it? What made me put other things aside and pursue something so completely impractical? I’d have to say it was a confluence of events and timing. And a part of me is still shocked I’m actually doing it...and a part of me is so thankful I’m doing it under a pen name!
What inspired you to write First Light?
First Light is the third book in the Haven Island Series. The entire series was inspired during a vacation to Bald Head Island, North Carolina, and that island is the inspiration for Haven Island.
Cali, the heroine in First Light, first appears in Rogue Wave, the first book in the series. Logan, the hero in First Light, is also in Rogue Wave. In Rogue Wave, they are minor characters. Cali is a tutor, hired to teach Tate’s adopted daughter English, and Logan is a cop. A little funny story - a cop on BHI actually pulled me and gave me a ticket for not coming to a complete stop on my golf cart at a stop sign. True story. Logan is NOT inspired by that cop. But, rather, Logan is more everything I wish that man had been.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in First Light?
Cali is an accomplished linguist. Her life has been uprooted, thanks to her twin brother. She doesn’t completely understand why, or what he’s done, but she loves him and trusts him and goes along with his requests...until he pushes her too far.
Logan is former military who transitioned to the Chicago police force. He ultimately is transitioned to a more low-key locale after he loses control of his temper. He’s a strong, protective guy who has always yearned to make a positive difference. When he first arrives on the island, he’s reeling from divorce. Friends and Cali help to pull him back into life again.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
You know, I think my answer to this question changes all the time. But, today, at this moment, I’d have to say Sarina Bowen. I love her books because of the way they make me feel. Her characters always feel realistic to me, and often, they’re the kinds of people I wish I could hang out with.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
First Light serves to spin the Haven Island Series. Erik, Cali’s twin brother, is the hero in Crushed, the first book of the Twisted Vines Series, which takes place in Northern California. Those three books will release next year.
If those books are received well, I might continue with another three in Santa Barbara. Or I could take a totally different tack...right now I’m working on outlining the third book in the Vines series.
I also have a holiday novella coming out November 8, Misplaced Mistletoe. It features a character from my first published book, and it’s a fun, second-chance holiday stand-alone romance.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I enjoyed writing the hurricane scene. Having grown up in the south, and having lots of family members that live in Eastern North Carolina, it just felt like a natural ending to the series. Hurricane Hannah hit on my younger brother’s wedding weekend. We remained on the island. It arrived as a Cat 1, so we weren’t completely nuts, although about half of his wedding attendees didn’t make it. So, it was also a bit like traveling back in time and sleeping (or trying to sleep) through a raging storm and then waking up and venturing out in the morning, searching for those first rays of morning light and wondering how much damage had been done.
