Interview with M.L. Stark

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

  • I'd been struggling with my idea for a novel for years. I’d many doubts whether I wanted to talk about the abusive relationship or not. I didn’t know if I wanted to get it out to the world, because it heavily influenced my writing by my first-hand experience of dating a psychopath. By enduring a more in-depth of my mind, heart, and soul, I wanted to find the strength and the truth about myself.

  • Suddenly one morning, I searched for my many scribbling notes instead of tidying up my entire pile of moving boxes. I grabbed my computer and started typing, reading notes, typing, reading old emails, typing again, then researching, and typing again. I’d no idea where it all came from, except I knew what everything should be about, including the characters and the development for the entire plot. After many days of writing, and of course I'd organized and muddled everything so badly. By reading it, I then knew how important it was to me to find out of what had happened in my previous love life. It took me four years to write the first book, and beforehand I’d already spent two years in researching many things about the antagonist.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

  • My primary goal was self-healing during my helplessness, when I wanted to scream at the anger I had endured during the abuse. I needed to understand why I had let myself being ill-used. And why I could not say stop the relationship, when the man I unconditionally loved, exhausted, and abused me?

  • My next goal was to shed light and increase awareness on a tabued subject as psychological abuse is. Talking and giving more understanding about the blindness in the adoration of the many love-scammers. Then talk about how the sociopaths use to mentally abuse others, as the line between love and manipulation is anything but clear-cut.

  • Writing my story was the greatest achievement. It made me comprehend much more of why it’s so difficult for the victim to leave their abuser. I understand so much more about being a victim, but also, of the importance of being a survivor!

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

  • There are always different opinions about what an author writes. And so is it also with my books. Some say I’m crazy, naïve, and foolish. Many say it’s brave and full of courage to talk about a tabued subject. Few say it’s bunk, a lie, and that real life isn’t like that. But it is! The majority say the story is amazing, helpful, and comparable to their own experience. Have in mind; you cannot satisfy every person in the world. I learned a lot from the few negative comments and not so excellent book reviews. I enjoyed and embraced the many good ones, because they will always be in the majority. Let no one take away the courage from you if you want to write. It’s your story line! Not theirs! For you were the one who experienced it, or you had the plot in mind, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

  • That is one of the hardest questions, which I find difficult to answer. There was indeed nothing enjoyable during my writing. It was exhausting! It was horrible to re-live all the mental abuse and pain again. However, I am passionate with my writing and do it from my heart and soul because I am original. Nevertheless, at times the writing energized me––at times it drew out my energy until I exhausted fell asleep. Sometimes I wanted to give up but giving up was not an option, so my strength was my joy.

  • However, finishing the book was immense.

  • Get it published was grander.

  • Have the first printed version psychical in my hand was the paramount joyfulness and relief I’ve ever experienced.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

  • BURNING DESIRE FADES: The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes––Part 2. This is the continuation of being further tangled into a toxic relationship and presents the continuation of the maliciously agenda of Doctor Bates. It’s a matter of survival for Mary as her life is on the brink of insanity to her Knight in Shining Armor. Fraud, lies, dominance, torment, and the complexity of an abusive relationship evolve and will unexpectedly be a new part of Mary’s life.

How long have you been writing?

  • I have always written lots of notes. Mostly because I didn’t want to forget anything about my life. I think since I was a teen; I desired to write an autobiography. It never came to fruition, but in 2016, I had the courage to grab my pen and paper. So, the serious writing began in 2016.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in (BURNING DESIRE: The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes – Part 1)?

  • Doctor Bates presents himself as educated, funny, charming and with a public persona of normalcy so no one cannot see what lays behind the dark shade of him. The antagonist is inappropriately flirting with his new victim, stepping over the etical line between patient and Doctor. He’s an unnerving sociopathic doctor. A self-absorbed, lying person whom throughout his entire life has exploited, stolen, swindled other people and love-scammed many women. It showcases how Doctor Bates, manipulates his target, for money and to maintain a sense of power over his victim’s vulnerability. Drake makes his way into the protagonist’s psyche and wield power and fear to attract Mary. The antagonist is a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde type, consuming the protagonist, into his dark, shady terror of promises of a better and happier life.

  • We follow Mary’s life to Spain in 2010, as her lifespan living in a petrifying mess, in an unfulfilling marriage with her unfaithful filthy rich husband. She has been married for over 2 decades, they have four children, dogs, expensive cars, a boat, and a luxury apartment in Downtown.

  • Often, Mary spends her time in their summer residence in Spain. The beautiful tall blond and sporty woman’s life seems blissful on the outside, but behind the scenes, it is chilling. The protagonist is somewhat naïve and a too trusting faithful housewife, but anxious and on the edge to commit suicide.

  • Mary has some minor health issues, so while being in Spain she meets the antagonist, Doctor Bates at his clinic seeking for treatment. Something vastly magical happened around him and Mary begins a secret passionate love affair with Doctor Bates. Quickly she gets involved in his manipulative behaviour, but little did she know that trusting him was fatal. Mary becomes a character in the antagonists weird imaginary disturbing life as Drake Bates sinks into his mania of deceives and lies. However, Mary, knows nothing about psychopathy, narcissism, or sociopathy, so she takes the chance with him, and the romance takes them around the globe. Nevertheless, it was too late for Mary to escape, and her life ends disastrous.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from (BURNING DESIRE: The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes – Part 1) who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

  • I will spend my time with Mary. The reason I chose her; I want to drag her out of a toxic relationship she is about to start with, a sickening person. I want to bring awareness to the many red flags Mary is about to overrule. Then warn her about the many red flags she doesn’t see, because she is a too fragile and trusting person and cannot see any evil in any human being.

  • Mary loves coffee and the beach. So, I would invite her to a nice coffee place nearby the beach. Buy her a to-go-coffee and walk in calmness with her on the beach and talk about the mistake she is about to do.

About the Author

M. L. Stark has been married for over 20 years and has adult children and grandchildren. She based certain elements of the story on real-life events. When Stark was middle-aged, she underwent a divorce and met a new man who mentally abused her. These experiences and her survival have empowered her to write stories about surviving cruelty and abuse.

"I am telling the story not of what I thought I was meant to be born into, but as the survivor I have become after abuse. I am also hoping to connect with people and deter them from facing a toxic relationship in their lives by sharing my own real-life events." Stark says.

M. L. Stark dares to discuss what it is like to be in an abusive relationship, and shows the power in embracing the experience, prevailing and ultimately recovering from the abuse, escaping the psychopath and helping others tap into their empathy and prevail over similar hazards.
