Interview with Derek W Whaley

Introduce yourself and tell me about what you do.

I’m a father of two children who I love dearly. I love sports (football) and spending time with my kids. I am a therapist in Derry NH. I work with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, Bipolar, and major depressive disorder just to name a few conditions. The bottom line is that I generally help people feel better about their situation.

Tell me more about your journey as an author, including the writing processes.

I have been writing this story for 15 years. Ever since I first went on a deployment, I told myself there is a story here. I simply had to wait for the material to play itself out and sit back and observe.

As for the writing process itself, that was pretty straight forward. The book was already written in my head, I just needed to get it onto the pages in an order that made sense. I wrote on my lunch breaks at work and I wrote if I felt like it at home—I didn’t want to pressure the situation so I only wrote when my heart was in it. Hopefully that love, slow pace, and detail spilled out onto the pages.

Tell me about your Book (that you want to talk about)

For the most part this book really is a male love story. A story of brotherhood and what trouble a bunch of young men can get into within the military. I want to talk about the bond each member has. I want to talk about the leadership qualities of the main character. I want to talk about the devotion each member has to one another. I want to talk about the lengths each character will go to save his brother in arms. I also want to talk about the comedy, jokes, and shenanigans that happen in a deployment setting.

Book Genre

Military fiction, but all stories are based off true situations.

Appropriate age for readers

I would let my daughter read it and she is 16 now... so 16

5 or more quotes/oneliners from your Book

  1. Fwapp, fwapp, fwapp, fwapp, fwapp. The sound you are hearing is that of my neighbor, the 3-man of my four-member fireteam, masturbating.

  1. I swear on everything that is holy those siren operating sons of bitches purposely blast that shit every time I am trying to sleep.

  1. The terrorists over here are not stupid. They have a mission, and they are very good at maiming, injuring, and killing American soldiers.

  1. My ears were on fire, my nostrils were on fire, and my lips felt like I just kissed the ass of Satan himself.

  1. One time when I was over at their house she called me a white devil, so I am guessing we are not on the best of terms.

  1. I will admit, I could have acted faster but the sight of Ja running around like a schoolgirl was very humorous.

Story (that you want to highlight)

The relationship between the main character and his best friend. They have come to love each other in a way only two men can understand. They care for each other and only want the best for each other. This is shown in their bond through life and the struggles of death.
