Excerpt:
Marcello left his condo unlocked and sauntered into the lobby to pick up his mail in his slippers and favourite over-stretched sweater, which was covered in cat hair. He did not anticipate seeing anyone, and certainly not Winnie’s daughter. One encounter was sufficient enough for his lifetime. Annette quickly turned to face the front door when she became aware of someone entering the lobby. Concentrating on her task, she wiped her eyes and nose with a used tissue. If it wasn’t so cold, she would have waited outside to avoid the person. Marcello, thinking it might be better if he returned later, changed his mind when he was certain Annette had heard the hallway door click.
Ignoring her, he first checked his empty mailbox, then opened the hallway door. He was a man with manners, so he faced Annette and offered a confident nod to make it clear he did not fear her. Glaring at him, red-faced and tear-stained, she threw her last words across the lobby at him like a weapon.
“Stay away from my mother,” she hissed as he closed the hallway door and shuffled back to the security of his home.
