The God Queen returns. So, why is everyone squelching her power?

In a backwater Earth town, Rei Ettowa dreams of traveling across the stars to destroy Infiernen – the knight who murdered her brother.

When Rei discovers she is the reincarnation of the prophesied God Queen, she relishes her newfound ability to channel lightning for revenge. Unfortunately, blazing through a battlefield clashes with the Federation’s plan for Rei and the others like her. All the gods are to be trained as diplomatic figureheads to sway voters, not agents of war. Infiernen must remain untouched.

Unable to let go of her brother’s murder, Rei finds Infiernen. But instead of killing him, Rei discovers a secret the Federation has been keeping from her about her brother.

Now Rei is mad as hell. Her enemies must pay. But who are they? And what else is the Federation hiding from her?

Interview with M. L. Tishner

What made you want to become a writer?

I have always loved stories, even when I was very little. I have notebooks from when I was 5-years-old that are filled with scribbles. I didn’t know how to really write then, but I loved the idea of having a book filled with my words. I knew even then, I wanted to entertain people with my stories.

What inspired you to write The God Queen?

I first came up with the characters when I was thirteen (this was back in 1999). My two big obsessions at the time were Star Wars and Sailor Moon and I wanted to be a female Luke Skywalker who could wield the powers of Sailor Jupiter. It was then I started to write a story about such a character because it was the kind of book I wanted to read but wasn’t available at the time. Of course the story and characters evolved as I got older, but that was the spark that got this train rolling.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in The God Queen?

TGQ follows the POV of two characters: Rei and Bronx. They are Volocio, a species of human that evolved to be able to wield the elements and have a longer life span. In this world, the Volocio are considered gods (but they’re not).

Rei can wield lightning and is the eponymous reincarnation god queen. She had spent her life being hunted and her parents were murdered because of this fact. Her only family, her brother Niklaryn, had tried to protect her but was betrayed and Rei wants revenge. Now that she’s the god queen, she thinks she has the power to get what she wants, but as she navigates this new world and what this new identity means - she realizes that there’s so much more at stake and she has to decide what her role will be.

Bronx is a reaper who can kill with a touch, but he can’t control his powers. He tries not to get close to anyone, until he meets Rei. They were lovers in a past life and the attraction is still there, but he’s scared that he’ll hurt her so he fights between keeping her at arm’s length and playful flirting. He also knows a secret about Rei’s brother (who was also his mentor) that will shake her world view and he debates whether or not he should tell her.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Tamora Pierce was vital in my adolescence. She was the reason I really became a reader and I will always read a book of hers without even looking at the blurb.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

The second book in my series (Rebirth Saga) The Last Imperator is coming out June 1st! I am also working on a prequel anthology for the Rebirth Saga as well working on a modern Pride and Prejudice retelling where instead of a clash of social class, it’s a clash of cultures. I’m Peruvian-American living in Germany and I have learned how much differences in culture can sometimes create horrible first impressions.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I love writing scenes with Rei and Bronx. They play off each other so well and their chemistry is undeniable. I mean, I love my cast - but I always look forward to putting Rei and Bronx in a room together.
