Jake had drifted to Japan without any serious intent, and it was going… okay. He had made friends in the local Salsa community, his Japanese was improving, but for Jake the familiar feeling that had dogged him most of his life—that something special should be happening—had struck again.
Kenneth had been assigned to Japan by the pixie queen years ago, which is just enough time for a pixie to get bored and complacent while keeping tabs on the local talent. Most humans had no magic, and most magical humans didn’t know it was their power that made their food taste better, their paintings more vibrant, or people like them more.
When the two met, the spark in Jake gave Kenneth’s role a new urgency. Jake didn’t just have magic, he had a wild and unpredictable kind seen only once in a generation. How could Kenneth keep Jake’s magic from falling into enemy hands? Kill him? Recruit him? Somehow keep him ignorant?
Jake’s magic had quietly led him to Japan, subtly influencing every choice in his life. That something special Jake had been waiting for was about to happen, ensuring his and Kenneth’s lives would never be boring again.
Interview with Rasta Musick
For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?
The book begins with the story set in Japan, so it may be helpful to have some general knowledge about the country. After which, it expands into magic and pixies and the magical realm. I try to have an unusual twist on things to keep it fresh even for people well-versed in that mythology.
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
I live in Japan, so the initial setting is familiar to me. I had to do a bit of research for pixies to get a better sense of the mythology, though I had experienced them in different fictional stories I’d read in the past.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
Strangely enough, the book started off as a writing prompt. I wanted to write a short story from the prompt, but the idea spiraled out into this whole world that I wanted to explore at greater length. And so, here we are.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
It’s an honor and humbling to have anyone who would even say they’re a fan of me to begin with. To all my readers, thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed the story and found some of the magical entities interesting!
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Having the opportunity to give my own spin on pixies and their mythology was a lot of fun to me. I would like to think I did justice to the structural concepts to their society well enough to make a positive impression on readers.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
For the time being, I’m probably going to focus on my work as the publicist for Cinnabar Moth. I might find some time to expand on the world created in Pixies in the Mist and explore more of the characters’ stories in the future, though!
How long have you been writing?
I first started doing fictional writing when I was in my early teens, though it was never properly structured and often ended with unfinished stories. Pixies in the Mist is my first proper attempt at a novel-length story of any kind.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Pixies in the Mist?
Jake is essentially someone with a decent life who feels a deeper desire for something more than just decent. There’s a lust in him for something more, though he doesn’t know what exactly that would be. He starts off as very relaxed and becomes less and less so as the story progresses.
Kenneth, in contrast, wants nothing more than to keep his life as it is. He’s content with his lot. The wrench that meeting Jake throws into his life is unwanted, and he spends most of his time trying to minimize the impact on his life as much as he can. He knows his limits well, and he tries to avoid biting off more than he can chew.
If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Pixies in the Mist who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
I think Evelynn, if she were alive, would make for a fun person to hang out with. She’s witty and has a bit of attitude to her. I think she’d be really fun to go camping with. Lots of stories and adventuring around the woods.
