A vengeful drug lord. A vicious biker gang. A beautiful victim of a trafficking ring.

Nearly two years ago, former mafia leg-breaker Jake Caldwell had ruthless drug king Shane Langston staring down the wrong end of a pistol. Instead of pulling the trigger, Jake let the law handle it. Now Langston’s escaped from prison and is hell bent on killing the men who put him there—including their families.

As the body count rises, Jake and his best friend Sheriff “Bear” Parley follow the bloody clues and realize it’s not just Shane they need to stop. Jake will do whatever he can to protect the people he loves.

The fourth instalment of the award-winning Jake Caldwell series will have you biting your nails and praying you never have to make the trip to Asylum Road.

Interview with James L. Weaver

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
I would have to go with the chimpanzee. I could sit and watch them for hours. Plus, I was born in the year of the monkey, so I suppose that animal choice makes sense.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
On initial drafts, probably an hour or two a day on the days that I write. I don’t have a set schedule. If I feel like writing, I write. If I don’t or have something else going on, I don’t write. Once I get into the flow, I still generally stay at the two hour range, but I’ll write on more days.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
I read every single one of them. I am also a masochist and check every day to see if I have any new ones. Book reviews are fuel for the writer’s soul (at least for me). They do not affect what I write, but they do affect my desire to write.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Absolutely! That’s a really fun exercise for me to drop in references that flow within the story, but only a handful of people will get. Many of the last names of characters are friends and fans, my little homage to say thanks. I have two good friends whose names I used as FBI characters and I found them arguing one night over whose character was cooler. I thought that was awesome.

There’s a short segment in the new book about someone getting strangled with a vacuum cord. That came from a small group of friends at my last book launch party when we were laughing about how some people can’t seem to put the vacuum away. Someone mentioned getting strangled with the cord and said, “Put that in your book”. I said “Okay!” It’s an amusing dialog between my main characters, but there’s only four or five people on the planet Earth who will truly appreciate it. I think that’s cool.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Asylum Road?
The main character is Jake Caldwell, a former enforcer for the mob who worked his way out in search of a better life. He’s a tough guy with a troubled and violent past, but really does have a good heart. Unfortunately for Jake, he keeps finding himself in precarious situations that force him to rely on his past skills. On the plus side, he has Bear Parley, the wise-cracking and feared sheriff of his hometown on his side. Jake and Bear have a great relationship and writing the banter between the two of them is one of my favorite things to do.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I’ve started writing book five of the series called Husker Road. This one is going to find Jake and Bear in the midst of some bleak winter trouble in Nebraska. I hope to have it out sometime in 2020. I’ve also been getting a lot of requests for audiobook versions of the Jake Caldwell series, so I’m investigating doing that as well.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
Definitely as long as the words come which is typically in one to two hour spurts. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Some days will be nothing, some will be a couple of paragraphs and other days could be three full chapters.

What inspires you to write?
Having readers come up to me or posting in a review that they loved the book and can’t wait to read the next one. I also get inspired reading a really good author. There’s some writers out there that make me feel like a toddler with one of those giant Crayons writing on construction paper. But, I find that reading good writing pushes me to write better.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction. I will read the occasional non-fiction book, but I have to REALLY be into the subject matter.

Read series or stand alone?
A mix we’ll call stand-alone series. I love learning about characters and growing with them which you get from a series. I also like being able to pick up any novel in a series in any order without missing a beat because the author wrote the book to stand alone. That’s how I write my Jake Caldwell series. Like any Jack Reacher or Lucas Davenport adventure, you can read book 4 without having read books 1-3 and still have a great time. BUT, you will be missing out on some of the nuances which is why I, personally, have to start at book 1.

Read science fiction or horror?
Horror, I suppose though I don’t venture much past Stephen King.

Read the book or watch the movie?
Read the book, then watch the movie and bitch about all the cool stuff they left out of the movie.

Read ebook or paperback?
E-book. I simply like the portability of it and being able to sit in an airport and download whatever book I want in a matter of seconds.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or in a room with a computer and wi-fi only?
Definitely a room with a computer and wi-fi. Not a contest. I’m a news junkie, plus I could download anything the library has on the computer.

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour on-line?
I’d have to go with the cross-country book store tour, though I do appreciate the bloggers that take the time to interview me!
