A Winter Knight
by
Barbara Bettis
GENRE: Historical
Romance
BLURB:
He’s running from his
past; she’s running from her future. But on a snowy winter night, they find
each other and the surprising gift of love.
Sir Nicholas has given up on marriage. These days
he’s content to captain his friend’s troops and avoid entanglements—until one
winter night when he rescues a half-frozen woman from a snowstorm. Her
irrepressible spirit and kindness to others reminds him that all ladies aren’t
like his former intended, who wed his brother while Nick was on crusade. But he
can’t open his heart to Lady Clare. She’s bound to another, and Nick won’t
forfeit his honor. Even if she were free, he has nothing to offer but love, and
this lady deserves everything.
Lady Clare’s dying grandfather has arranged her
betrothal, but the arrival of the man she’s to wed sends her fleeing into a
snowstorm. Injured when her horse stumbles, she’s rescued by a mysterious
knight. She recovers at his run-down manor, safe at last—until her betrothed
tracks her down two days before Christmas. Trapped at home with the wedding
imminent, she longs for the winter knight she’s come to love.
Only a miracle can bring Clare and Nick together.
But at Christmas, anything is possible.
Excerpt:
Nick
had risen early. He’d fed the animals and checked the entrance gate. Another
job to be handled immediately. A working gate protected the manor—and kept out
unwanted visitors. But that repair must wait until he gathered more supplies.
The fact he’d moved his trip to Windom back a few days had nothing to do with a
certain Lady Clare. Or her trusting gray eyes. Or the fact of her betrothal. Or
the surprising betrayal he’d felt when he learned of it.
The
moment he entered the hall, Nick knew she was awake—as if a spark touched his
mind. His eyes sought her briefly before he turned. When he heard a thud, he
knew without looking what it meant. She’d just tried to stand on her own.
Stubborn woman.
In
a few long strides he reached her. She held the edge of the table
and
struggled to her feet. He simply reached down and lifted her into his arms.
After grabbing her fur-lined cloak, he started toward the back corridor.
She
wriggled. “Put me down. I’m capable of walking.” As she realized where he
headed, she yelped. “Don’t you…don’t you dare… I’ll die of mortification.”
He
stopped. He just did not understand women. “You’ve been sick with fever for a
day and a night. It’s natural to need the garderobe, but you can’t walk that
distance alone. Granny Bid’s busy. I’m not. Isn’t that reasonable?”
My Review:
Lady Clare’s dying Grandfather has arranged for her to marry
but when the gentleman shows up on her doorstep she flees into the night. Along
the way Lady' Clare’s horse stumbles and causes Clare to fall off. Clare is
lying in the snow freezing to death when Sir Nicholas finds her and takes her
to his rundown castle.
Sir Nicholas wonders why Clare was out on a cold snowy day
all by herself. Nicholas has a lot of questions for Lady Clare when she wakens
from her fever. When Lady Clare’s fiancĂ©e arrives at the castle Nicholas keeps
her hidden until he can find out from Clare herself as to why she ran away. He
is not going to send a lady back into danger if that is the case.
Things start to heat up between Lady Clare and Sir Nicholas
but Nicholas chooses to keep his feelings to himself as Clare is engaged to
another and he has nothing to offer a lady Clare statue. All he has is a rundown
castle to offer her and his heart. Meanwhile Clare is taken back home where she
spends her days pinning and longing for Sir Nicholas.
Clare is waiting a miracle to come her way. Maybe she will
get her miracle after all it is Christmas the time for miracles. Yeah the only
thing Clare is wishing for this year is for her knight in shining armor to come
to her rescue and save her from a life of misery. Will Clare get her wish? Will
Nicholas put his heart before his pride? Will Clare ever see Nicholas again?
When I was younger I loved reading historical romance and
read a lot but then I discovered horror but on occasion one will catch my
attention like A Winter Knight did. A Winter Knight caught my attention with
the summary and once I picked it I was drawn in from the first page and couldn’t
put it down until I had read the last page.
I loved all the characters and I liked watching as their
relationship developed and grew. Both Lady Clare and Sir Nicholas seemed to be great
people with great big hearts. I would like to read more of Lady Clare and Sir Nicholas’
stories and what their lives are like in the future.
I would recommend A Winter Knight to anyone looking for a
great romance story between two awesome people.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Award-winning author Barbara Bettis has
always loved history and English. As a college freshman, she considered
becoming an archeologist until she realized there likely would be bugs and
snakes involved. And math. Through careers as a newspaper reporter and editor,
then a college journalism and English professor, she’s retained her fascination
with history. Give her a research book and a pot of tea, and she’s happy for
hours. But what really makes her smile is working on a new story. Now retired,
she lives in Missouri where she edits for others and spins her own tales of
heroines to die for—and heroes to live for.
