Interview with Racquel Collard

What is your schedule like when you’re writing a book?

I’m not good at writing consistently each day, so I tend to block out days or weeks when I can and then do what I call a ‘brain dump’ for that.

After the initial flood of writing is over, I go back, tweak, amend, reframe, etc to make sure it makes sense, and I can work on that consistently, but I need to write in a flow.

Working with editors, designers, etc fits in around that as well.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

I didn’t for the non-fiction books as the brand for these is too closely aligned to my professional profile.

That said, I’m also working on a series of novels, so I may use a pseudonym for them to avoid confusion. I’ve yet to make a final decision on that though!

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Not so much with non-fiction writing as it’s pretty clear what needs to be written and why, and it’s quite prescriptive in that sense.

With fiction though, sometimes I do get a block, but I find it I go away and do something else, let it mull over in the subconscious, I can usually work my way through it and I’m fine when I sit down to write again. If I can imagine it, see it, feel it, then I can write it.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes, they do. When I was growing up, I was always told that writing was a nice hobby, not a real job, so it took a while to overcome that.

But now, with a non-fiction book tied into my business, it’s a no-brainer. Plus, they love seeing themselves in the acknowledgements or dedications!

On a day-to-day basis, my partner helps me stay on track. There are weeks when I’ll say I’m not going to binge TV and spend time writing, and if I think about ‘caving’ he’ll give me a questioning look to see if I really want to do that, so that helps. I need the accountability. He doesn’t nag but he does gently question me when I need it! That isn’t to say I always stick to the plan!

How many hours a day do you write?

A lot of my working day is spent writing in one form or another, so overall it averages about 6 hours for each working day.

But if you’re talking about writing a book, then, as I mentioned before, I don’t have a daily routine, I block out chunks of time so I can immerse myself in that world. It works better for me that way.

If you could invite any three people for dinner, whom would you invite?

Dinner parties for me are about interesting conversations, so, assuming we can go with living or dead people, I’d love to chat with people like Ruth Bader Ginsberg (for an interesting life), Amy Sherman-Palladino (for witty repartee), and Brene Brown (for her insights).

By the way, there are plenty of others on this list. I’ll need a bigger dining table!

Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?

I’ve had a number of career pivots over the years, but I believe they all brought me to this point, and all help me be a better writer.

From a student of accounting and law, to going into hotel management and marketing via wine making, I clearly don’t tolerate boredom well, but I love learning, so this is what works for me.

I need a t-shirt that reads: Always be learning! or something like that. The current one says: Nevertheless, she persisted.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

For non-fiction, who you are and what you bring to the table make the work original, but you need a clear objective for the book and then you have to deliver on that objective. Creativity for its own sake is not often useful there.

For fiction, I don’t tend to try to be original so much as writing something that I love that comes from my imagination (which I hope is original!), and then hope others might love it too.

How do you celebrate when you finish your book?

For the Marketing Launchpad book, we had a launch party which is unusual for me, I’m not a big party person, but it’s my first book so I was talked into ‘taking the moment’.

After each main stage: first draft, final draft, etc, I usually have a celebration dinner with friends and family and mark the occasion that way.

If you could be mentored by a famous author, who would it be?

My favorite author is Nora Roberts, so if she’s free – I’m so there!

Of course, it would be wise to choose the author against what you need to be mentored in but fangirl me would still want to choose Nora Roberts overall.
