Adam folded his arms across his
chest, blocking her way. “The world won’t grind to a halt if you cut back your
hours or take a day off once in a while.”
“I know that,” Lena said, glancing
at the clock. “I’ll make some adjustments. But right now I feel fine, and I
still have patients to check on.”
“Are you kidding me? You’re still
hooked up to an IV.”
“Which the nurse is about to remove.
Dr. Goodman said I’m good to go. He didn’t specify where.”
“Because any reasonable person
getting discharged from the ER would go home.”
“I’ll go home after I finish
rounding,” she said.
He glared at her, then cursed,
pivoted on his heel, and strode out of the room.
Lena stared at the privacy curtain
that continued to sway in his wake.
Where was the feeling of triumph at
having won the argument? She should be glad that Adam was finally gone. But all
she felt was deflated.
“Here we are,” the nurse said,
bustling in with a clipboard. “We’ll go over your discharge instructions after
I get that IV out.”
Minutes later, Lena was alone again,
pulling on her clothes. There was a cursory knock, followed by the squeak of
wheels.
“Your carriage, Princess.” Adam
pushed the wheelchair toward her.
She blinked against the prickle of
tears. Damned hormones. “I can walk.”
“Not to your car,” he said.
“Hospital policy.”
“But—”
“Your patients are all taken care
of,” he said. “Your partner will see the post-ops shortly. He said you should
go home, and congratulations on the pregnancy.”

As a writer, what
would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
Cat.
How many hours a day
do you put into your writing?
This
depends on the day, week, month, and what else is going on in my life. I’m a
physician with a busy medical practice, and a mom to three active kids. I try
to carve out a 3-5 hour block of “distraction-free” writing time about twice a
week, mostly on weekends. I also keep a notebook in my backpack, car, and
bedside table – so I can jot down ideas as they come.
Do you read your book
reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
I
keep telling myself: don’t look, don’t
look…but in the end, temptation wins out. Yes, I look. I like my ego
stroked as much as anyone, but I also realize that just because I find something interesting (both as a
writer and as a reader), it doesn’t mean everybody will. For me, writing is a
creative outlet for exploring issues that interest me; my characters give voice
to my hopes and desires and fears and frustrations. I’m always looking for ways
to hone my craft, so I’m grateful to readers who take the time to offer
constructive criticism. And to the readers who enjoy what I write: thank you! I
really appreciate the time you take to read my books and the effort you put
into reviewing them!
Do you leave hidden
messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Yes,
possibly. Some inside jokes about medicine, some of the character names...
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Oh, Baby?
Lena Shapiro is a
successful surgeon who sacrificed her personal life to build her career. Now
thirty-nine and single, she watches her peers pairing off and having kids, and
wonders if she missed out on her own chance at happiness.
Adam Sterling is a
second-year surgical oncology fellow doing a rotation at St. Mary’s Hospital,
where Lena is assigned to be his mentor.
Despite a mutual
attraction, neither is interested in starting a relationship. Adam, because
he’s leaving in four months for the East Coast, where he plans to join a prestigious
cancer research program; Lena, because she doesn’t have time to waste on
dead-end relationships—her biological clock is ticking so loudly that she’s
planning to sign up for a sperm bank and have a child on her own.
But when a series of
disasters bring Lena and Adam together, temptation proves too strong to resist.
And what starts out as a casual fling leads to consequences that neither of
them could have foreseen.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have
planned for the future?
I have at least one more
book to go in the Prescription: Romance! series (which includes my new release, Oh,
Baby!, as well as The
Burnout Cure.) Though some of the characters overlap, and the stories
take place at the same small community hospital in Santa Monica, CA, each book
can be read as a stand-alone.
Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write
as long as the words come? Do you have a certain number of words or pages you
write per day?
I carve out a block of
time and squeeze as much writing in during that time as I can. I don’t aim for
a particular number of words or pages, especially considering the time
constraints imposed by my “real life” (aka day job, kids, the gazillion-and-one
things on my to-do list). Last year, my kids gave me the best birthday present
ever: a stack of custom-made “Do Not Disturb” passes that I could use at will
to protect my writing time (see picture below).
What inspires you to write?
I draw inspiration from
everyday events and challenges that would keep me up at night if I didn’t write
about them. Writing is cheaper than therapy.
And because I write what
I know, my fictional world bears a very close resemblance to my real world.
It’s populated with doctors and other medical professionals (I’m a physician
with a busy medical practice), plus a few lawyers (thanks, sis), and
computer/math geeks (like my darling husband, who helps me with the lingo and
selflessly offers feedback on the sex scenes). As a mom, I like to think I know
something about parenting (I hear you snickering, kiddos!), so that finds its
way into some of my books as well.

Stand-alone that is also
part of series. I love interconnected stories but I hate cliff-hangers, so the
best of all possible worlds is having a series of books I can dip in and out of
without having to read them in order.

Online. I love doing as
much as possible from the comfort of my own bed!
