Interview with Sarah Lampkin

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

Well, obviously, they should read the first two books of the Dead Dreamer series, duh. But seriously, if anyone has ever had any interest in religious studies, it’s always fun to start exploring old world mythologies and seeing how they influence today’s media and world.

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

I’ve always had an interest in mythology. It originally started with the Egyptian obsession, but eventually grew to Catholicism and Celtic mythology; not to mention Nordic. As I grew older and the internet…became a thing…I was able to dig deeper into history and really dive into the themes and worlds I was getting ready to create.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

My goal was to create a series where the main character wasn’t just super good and innocent. I wanted someone who was flawed and wouldn’t be liked by everyone. Someone…realistic? I can’t describe it well, ironically. I think I achieved that based on some of the reviews I’ve seen where people hate my main character because she’s so mean. When like to say…she’s just really really blunt with no filter. And mean to some…but there is a reason for that…even if it’s self-conscious.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

THANK YOU FOR READING THE BOOKS. I never expect anyone to pick up my books and even like them. You know, that self-deprecating behavior. But it thrills me when people send me fan art, or theories about where the stories will go. I’m waiting for the day some fanfics are written…I love it.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Writing my antagonists. And I don’t even like calling them antagonists…because all characters in this series have a reason for what they do and all believe they’re doing the right things. The world of Dead Dreamer is complex, and not everything is as it seems. As a reader, you have to try and determine who is right and who is wrong.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I’ve planned one more book for the Dead Dreamer series, but it’s taking me forever to write it. Mainly because my day job has become extremely busy post COVID. But I’m hoping to get it done by the January deadline! Otherwise, I have a few other books in the works, but they’re in the planning period at the moment.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since high school, so maybe 2004? Being in a Baptist high school, my first story was angel centric and pretty PG. So…boring. But on the side, I have been attempting to rewrite the story and renamed it TAINTED WINGS. This is a young adult story that is different from Dead Dreamer in MANY ways, but it always had a special place in my heart being my first official story.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in TO REAP THE SPIRIT (Dead Dreamer Book 3)?

In TO WAKE THE DEAD (Dead Dreamer Book 2), Brenna was introduced to a slew of new characters, but there was one in particular people have asked about. She received letters from a mysterious sender from Ireland who was trying to help her learn the truth about the Gatekeepers/Guardians of the Keepers. But we never know who it was. Well…now we do. TO REAP THE SPIRIT will open the door to characters who have always been there but hidden in the background the entire time. It’s going to be a WILD ride.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from TO REAP THE SPIRIT (Dead Dreamer Book 3) who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I would LOVE to have a day with Lara and Leon. The twins from hell are my favorites. I’d bundle Leon up in a blanket to keep him safe from the world while having a long discussion with Lara about the reasons behind her actions. Probably arguing over a glass of whiskey. Let’s hope she wouldn’t kill me…or get Leon to kill me. Could go either way.
